Crews responded to a house fire at 6135 Carolina Trail in Roanoke County on March 22, 2021. ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. โ UPDATEAuthorities said that a fire that displaced a family of four in Roanoke County on Monday was caused by a clothes dryer. According to Roanoke County Fire and Rescue, the fire was accidental and caused around $200,000 in damages. Shortly after 5 p.m., Roanoke County Fire & Rescue crews responded to 6135 Carolina Trail for a reported house fire. The Roanoke County Fire Marshalโs Office is investigating what caused the fire.

Roanoke County stays local for selection of new Fire & Rescue chief
ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. โ Roanoke County Fire & Rescue has named Travis Griffith as the departmentโs new fire chief. He began his service with Roanoke County Fire & Rescue in 2002 as a Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician for the department. AdโThe pandemic created so many challenges in just trying to adapt to new ways of doing things as far as keeping personnel safe,โ said Griffith. โFirst and foremost, weโve got to provide for the men and women of our department,โ said Griffith when questioning his initial priorities. Griffith resides in Roanoke County with his wife Ellen and daughters Carly and Claire.

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. โ Roanoke County Fire & Rescue has had to rely on other departments for some rescue calls. Geoff Tuck from Roanoke County Fire & Rescue. Thanks to new equipment, Roanoke County Fire & Rescue will be ready for any swift water rescue call. The county spent $150,000 on three motorboats, a paddleboat, drysuits and life jackets to equip and train its very own swift water rescue team. The county works closely with Roanoke Cityโs and Salemโs swift water rescue teams because theyโre all part of a statewide Technical Rescue Team.
Body found in Roanoke River near Niagara Dam identified as missing man
Roanoke Fire-EMSโs Swift Water Team is assisting Roanoke County PD and Roanoke County Fire & Rescue with a body recovery operation at Niagara Dam. Authorities have identified the body that was found in the Roanoke River in Vinton last month. Police said the body was originally found on Jan. 26 near the Niagara Dam and has been identified as Dolph Dellinger, who was reported missing out of Roanoke. According to the Roanoke County Police Department, officers tried to find and notify his family to no avail. Authorities said the investigation into how Dellinger got into the river is being handled by the Roanoke City Police Department.

Crash caused delays on I-81S in Roanoke County
A crash caused delays on I-81S in Roanoke County on Tuesday afternoon. Authorities said the crash happened near mile marker 142. As of 2:04 p.m., traffic was backed up for 3.5 miles and the southbound right shoulder was closed. According to Roanoke County Fire & Rescue, the crash resulted in minor injuries. The roadway is now clear.
One person injured in overnight apartment fire in Roanoke County
ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. An apartment fire early Sunday morning left one person hurt and significant damage to the exterior of the building. Roanoke County Fire & Rescue tells us they were called to the 3500 block of Sunchase Lane in the Sunscape Apartment complex around 12:30 a.m. Fire and smoke were visible upon their arrival. The person injured was attempting to use a fire extinguisher. The fire appears to have started on an outdoor balcony with most of the damage contained to the exterior structure. The Roanoke County Fire Marshals Office will investigate.
Crews put out garage fire in Roanoke County
ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. โ UPDATEAuthorities say the cause of the fire was accidental in nature, but the exact cause couldnโt be determined. ORIGINAL STORYCrews worked to put out a fire that happened in a detached garage Monday night in Roanoke County. According to Roanoke County Fire & Rescue, the fire happened around 10:45 p.m. in the 6600 block of Northway Drive. When crews arrived, they found a detached garage in flames. The Roanoke County Fire Marshalโs Office is investigating a cause and an estimated amount for damages.
Crews rescue 125-pound dog from McAfee Knob Trail after owner calls for help
A dog and his owner are safe after a scare on McAfee Knob Trail on Thursday. The department said that crews responded to the trail at about 12:20 p.m. to rescue Nikko, who had been hiking in 90 degree heat for several hours when his owner called for help. Nikko and his owner were safely off the trail at about 2 p.m., according to the department. Roanoke County Fire & Rescue said Nikko is an Akita who loves to hike, and this has never happened before with him. Roanoke County Fire & Rescue bought the piece of equipment used to save Nikko with money from a partnership with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.
Firefighters drive through creek to get to house fire in Montgomery County
ELLISTON, Va. An early morning house fire proved challenging for local firefighters on Thursday. Pictures from the Roanoke County Fire & Rescue Department show a house just outside of Elliston in Montgomery County fully engulfed. Multiple fire departments from Montgomery County as well as Roanoke County firefighters responded. The bridge on the road leading to the house is out, so firefighters had to drive through a creek to get there. We have some very similar areas in Roanoke County, so this is nothing really new to us when things like this happen, Roanoke County Fire & Rescue Department Community Outreach Coordinator Brian Clingenpeel said.
Roanoke County firefighters get improved thermal cameras
ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. Some local first responders are getting a technology upgrade that could help save lives. Roanoke County firefighters have nine new thermal imaging cameras. Theyre more user-friendly than their current cameras and are more responsive. Funding from the Virginia Department of Fire Programs paid for the cameras. We want folks to use the camera to make decisions and not necessarily just look for hot spots, not look for victims, things like that, said Roanoke County Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief Charlie Rucker.
Roanoke EMS call prompts carbon monoxide detector reminder
ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. - A weekend emergency medical services call in Roanoke is prompting a reminder about carbon monoxide. They were responding to a call about an unresponsive patient when their portable carbon monoxide detector went off. At that point, they started getting people outside," Roanoke County Fire & EMS community outreach coordinator Brian Clingenpeel said. Signs of carbon monoxide poisoning are similar to the flu. If you suspect you're suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning, get to fresh air immediately and call 911.
