One man is dead after a shooting in Pittsylvania County Tuesday, according to the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.

An investigation is underway after an inmate at the Pittsylvania County Jail died.

The Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office said 41-year-old Charles Jermaine Pannell Jr has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the incident described below.

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. - The Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office arrested one of its own on Monday night. Authorities responded to a domestic-related incident in the 3000 Block of Bannister Road in Chatham. After further investigation, Shannon Edwards, an investigator with the Sheriffs Office, was arrested and charged with domestic assault and battery. PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. - Pittsylvania County authorities are searching for a person who they say robbed a bank on Monday. The robber entered the Virginia Bank and Trust located at 10370 Martinsville Highway around 12:15 p.m. and demanded money from a teller, according to the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office. The robber ran away with an undisclosed amount of money, according to the Sheriff's Office. The search for the robber triggered a lockdown Monday afternoon at two Pittsylvania County elementary schools. Authorities say a person of interest was last seen near the bank, walking east on Martinsville Highway.

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. - A man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after being shot while attempting to break into his mothers home Saturday, according to the Pittsylvania County Sheriffs Office. The man, 25-year-old Xavier Tyler Slayton, was shot by a 17-year-old relative at a home in the 700 block of Cedar Forest Road, deputies said. Slayton, who was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital, will be charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit murder, according to deputies. PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. - The Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office is investigating a possible choking of a student on a school bus. The Sheriff's Office was made aware of the incident about 11:20 p.m. Monday. Deputies then met with the victim and parent, which led them to initiate an investigation into the circumstances around the incident. Currently, deputies are working to identify any student who may have witnessed what happened. Pittsylvania County School division administrators are assisting the Sheriff's Office with its investigation.

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. - A day after three people were murdered in Pittsylvania County, a suspect is in custody and on suicide watch, but many questions remain. The Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate this case, including the scene. Matthew Bernard is charged with three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Matthew Bernard banged his head against the inside of the patrol car after being arrested. Matthew Bernard is expected to be in court soon, but the date has not been confirmed.

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. - A day after three people were murdered in Pittsylvania County, many questions remain. At 4 p.m., the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office will provide answers as to why Matthew Bernard is accused of killing his mother, Joan Bernard; his sister, Emily Bivens; and his 14-month-old nephew, Cullen Bivens. Bernard is charged with three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Bernard's sister was married to Blake Bivens, a minor league pitcher in the Tampa Bay Rays organization. PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. - Many people have asked what led state troopers to just run around triple murder suspect Matthew Bernard before his arrest Tuesday, rather than being more direct. On Wednesday, Virginia State Police explained why they took the approach they did when it came to arresting Bernard. Rick Garletts, with Virginia State Police. The trooper did not have a Taser as only members of state police tactical teams are equipped with them. Eventually, Bernard was taken to the ground with the assistance of a state police K-9 and two other troopers.

LYNCHBURG, Va. - A Lynchburg business is feeling the effects financially and emotionally after it was broken into over the weekend. Vito Carcioppolo, owner of Jojo Pizza tells 10 News a thief or thieves broke through a side door, that is now boarded up, to get inside and steal money in a back office. Carcioppolo said the money stolen will impact their bills and the employees' paychecks. Neither the owner nor police could say how much money was stolen. The Lynchburg Police Department extended its appreciation to the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office, which assisted the investigation with the use of a police K-9.

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Lynchburg Police Department is investigating a break-in that occurred at JoJo Pizza overnight. Officers responded to 1400 Lakeside Drive for a report of breaking and entering at 10:37 a.m. Sunday. An unknown offender or offenders were able to escape with an undisclosed amount of money. The Lynchburg Police Department extended its appreciation to the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office, which assisted the investigation with the use of a police K-9. PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. - Deputies arrested and charged a man they say filmed women in a bathroom inside a marina at Smith Mountain Lake. On July 25, the marina owner contacted the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office after someone found a concealed camera inside the women's room. The next day, the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office arrested 65-year-old David Lee Robertson at his home in the Penhook area of the county. If convicted, each offense carries a sentence of up to 12 months in jail and a fine of up to $2,500. Robertson was released from jail pending a hearing in Pittsylvania County General District Court on Oct. 22.
