They don’t want a hot dog, they just want to show their support," said Freeman. "We try to get them to take a hot dog, and they don’t want one. They just came to give.”The rescue squad raised approximately $20,000 before the hot dog benefit, which means Freeman now has about $40,000 to find a new home.

Not the cascades, but definitely a pretty part of Little Stony Creek. But we made it, and I would recommend this hike for sure, but maybe on a cooler day.

The Pembroke Volunteer Fire Department was awarded a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant worth more than $720,000 to buy an air compressor, 55 masks, and 99 new air packs self-contained breathing apparatus. "It was a real relief," said Wayne Woodyard, the assistant chief at the Poplar Hill department and a volunteer at Pembroke. The departments wont get the new equipment until the spring, but knowing its on its way, Woodyard and Neice are breathing a sigh of relief. "We're going to be taking care of our guys, giving them the best equipment that we can afford as possible.

In addition to the lodge being named 'Hotel of the Year,' Mountain Lake’s General Manager, Heidi Stone, has been named 'Hotelier of the Year'. “We stand in awe of our ‘Miracle on the Mountain.’ It’s a real comeback story where Heidi Stone and her hard-working team, along with the Mountain Lake Board of Directors, have kept Mountain Lake and the 'Dirty Dancing' spirit alive," said Betty Massey, executive director of the Mary Moody Northen Endowment, the private foundation based in Texas that owns Mountain Lake Lodge. The property’s turnaround includes a complete overhaul inside and out, but Stone said it wasn’t big money that saved Mountain Lake Lodge. “Mountain Lake Lodge would not exist today if it weren’t for Heidi Stone.
