Coach Hedrick says the visiting Panthers will bring a lot of size to Roanoke. If you see a game that looks some like a snail can compete, it could be a long night for us,” Hedrick explains. ROANOKE, Va. – The third time is typically the charm, but not for the William Fleming girls on Tuesday night. They faced off with cross-town rival Patrick Henry for the third time this season, this time in the Region 5D Semifinals. Back at the home of the Colonels, the William Fleming boys had no problems with Albemarle-- coming away with a 61-21 victory. Lord Botetourt defeated Carroll County 86-46, advancing to the Region 3D Semifinals. They will play at Northside, which defeated William Byrd Tuesday night.

Roanoke, Va. – Monday marked the first day of basketball practice for the abbreviated VHSL winter season. But the Roanoke-Alleghany zone remaining in Phase 2 restrictions, practices are underway at schools including Patrick Henry with limitations. This also means less time for tryouts. Schools wait for the metrics to calm down in order to proceed with games, possibly later this month. The original VHSL guidelines marked December 21st as the first basketball game date, while other winter sports could begin competition on December 28th.

I think we all knew at some point we might get some positive tests.

MARION, Va. – A small town in Southwest Virginia became the backdrop for a opposing protests on Friday. As Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ+ protesters were marching Friday evening, counter-protesters with the American Patriots followed them. Police asked the Black Lives Matter protesters to keep walking up one side of the road. It all started back in June, one day after a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest was met with counter-protesters. The family organized that Black Lives Matter protest and the one on Friday.

One of Mike Hedrick’s charges made a big decision on Tuesday. Patrick Henry’s Monesha Wright commits to VSU. In a congratulatory tweet, Hedrick calls an NCAA D-2 scholarship to Virginia State ‘a life changer.’ The 6-0 senior post will be heading to compete in the CIAA. The Patriots are coming off their first ever trip to the VHSL final 4. They’ve put together back-to-back region championships and Wright has been right in the middle of it all.

The girls basketball Class 5 State Final 4. The ‘Star Trek-like’ feat was accomplished by Patrick Henry head girls coach Michael Hedrick and his lady Patriots. Friday he was honored with the VHSL Class 5 Girls Coach of the Year title. Patrick Henry was 22-6 overall, and the region D champion. The Patriots won a state quarterfinal match up with before bowing out in the state semifinals.

ROANOKE, Va. – Three area teams are moving onto the State Championship showdowns this week in Richmond. The Patriots ultimately fell 59-35, Highland Springs will play Princess Anne in the state championship. They will see Green Run in the state championship. In Class 3, The Lord Botetourt girls were back in the state semi-finals, this year taking on Booker T. Washington. “I told the three volleyball girls as we were walking in, the last time you guys were here it was a state championship,” head coach Renee Favaro said.

ROANOKE, Va. – For the past three years, their motto has been “Be Better”. And since Mike Hedrick became head coach, that’s all the Patrick Henry girls basketball team has done. Hedrick says the girls have bought into the “Be Better” philosophy on and off the court. If you do it one time, maybe it’s luck, but we’ve done it 3 years in a row and every year we’ve gotten better, beaten better competition,” Hedrick said. Patrick Henry will host Highland Springs at William Fleming High School in Roanoke on Tuesday night.

In the other Class 5 girls game, the William Fleming girls fell to Woodgrove 51-47. On the boys side, defending state champ GW Danville advanced to their third final 4 in four years with a 63-55 win over Loudon County. Halifax County fell to Millbrook 61-58. In Class 1, Grundy edges Parry McCluer 49-46, while Auburn vs Eastside scheduled for UVA-Wise was moved to Saturday because of snow. Honaker defeated George Wythe 65-59 and PH Glade Spring downs Galax 51-30.and in Class 1 Grundy beat Parry McCluer 49-46.

Roanoke, Va. – The Patriots program is no stranger to churning out student athletes that continue their academic and athletic careers in college. Patrick Henry HS signed four athletes to the next level on Thursday. It is another quality class at the home of the Patriots. It is the most important day we have, everything is positive. If they do not have that piece it shuts a lot of doors,” Patriots athletic director Patricia Sheedy said.
