The ODU study set out to determine if Virginia has its own tornado alley. The study looked at a few factors: tornado frequency, tornado track and percentage of mobile homes in a given area. There’s a primary “Tornado Alley” in eastern and northern Virginia that includes Richmond, the Tidewater and the D.C. metro area. Although there are not as many mobile homes in those areas, the tornado frequency and track is higher than other parts of the viewing area.

Dr. Brian Hemphill will become the ninth president of Old Dominion University this summer. Hemphill was named Radford’s president in December 2015 and took office in July 2016. At ODU, Hemphill will succeed President John Broderick, who is retiring after 28 years at Old Dominion and 13 years as its president. “It is both an honor and privilege to be selected as the ninth president of Old Dominion University, a dynamic public research institution that has proudly served the Hampton Roads region and positively impacted the Commonwealth of Virginia,” said Hemphill.

The project comes from the 2020 State of the Commonwealth Report from ODU’s Strome College of Business. Sunday’s report said the pandemic ended a record of 11 straight quarters of economic growth and wiped out nearly a decade of job gains. But by April 2020, about 438,000 jobs in Virginia were temporarily furloughed or permanently laid off. And while Virginia has recovered about 200,000 jobs since then, there has been slowing job growth.

A founder and former leader of a neo-Nazi group has pleaded guilty to conspiring to place hoax phone calls targeting an African American church, a Cabinet official, journalists and others. Prosecutors say Denton was leader of a group called Atomwaffen Division. More than a dozen people linked to Atomwaffen Division or an offshoot called Feuerkrieg Division have been charged with federal crimes since the groups formation in 2016. Denton also placed swatting calls to the New York City offices of news outlet ProPublica, and to a ProPublica reporter in Richmond, California. Another member of the swatting conspiracy, former ODU student John William Kirby Kelley, is scheduled to enter a plea next week.
