On the girls side, top-seeded Cave Spring welcomed in a stout Carroll County squad. Zada Porter led the Knights with 11 points in the final game of her high school career. Carroll County defeats Cave Spring in the Region 3D Championship (WSLS)On the boys side, Northside traveled to a much-improved Abingdon team that knocked off defending Co-Champion, Cave Spring. It was a close back-and-forth game in the first half that led to a slim 2-point halftime lead for the Falcons.

They faced off with cross-town rival Patrick Henry for the third time this season, this time in the Region 5D Semifinals. Back at the home of the Colonels, the William Fleming boys had no problems with Albemarle-- coming away with a 61-21 victory. Lord Botetourt defeated Carroll County 86-46, advancing to the Region 3D Semifinals. They will play at Northside, which defeated William Byrd Tuesday night.

A layup from Trent Dawson gave Roanoke a 51-50 lead but Greensboro hit clutch shots down the stretch, securing a 67-61 win.

The Roanoke County school board voted Thursday night to name Northside's gym after the veteran coach who has won more than 500 games in a 33-year coaching career, including the school's first boys basketball state championship this season. The county policy is to not honor an individual in this way until they are no longer a part of the school system for one year. The policy was not changed, but an exception was made for coach Pope.
