PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. – One man is dead and two others are being treated for serious injuries after a crash on New Year’s Day in Pittsylvania County. Shortly before 2 a.m., police responded to the single-vehicle crash on Tom Fork Road, two miles east of Ringgold Road. His two passengers, 27-year-old Lekita Jones and 24-year-old Malik Williamson, were each taken to the hospital to be treated for serious injuries, according to police. Natural Bridge in Rockbridge County typically hosts guided tours; however, because of the pandemic, they had self-guided ones and a scavenger hunt. Workers said although the crowd was smaller this year, it’s a symbolic way to start the year off on the right foot. Jackson said many people took advantage of the outdoors in 2020 and he hopes it continues this year.

ROANOKE, Va. – The Roanoke Star was the finish line for some runners Friday morning who were looking to fulfill a more than 30-year-old tradition. Every New Year’s Day, Star City Striders, a running group in the Roanoke Valley, hosts a run to the star. To ring in 2020, 200 people did the run; however, due to COVID-19 and the restrictions on gatherings, the official run couldn’t happen this year. Even though it wasn’t official, runners and walkers still laced up their shoes and started the year started on a healthy note. Star City Striders plans to start its tradition back up on New Year’s Day 2022.

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. – A 24-year-old Lynchburg man is in jail after a chase early on New Year’s Day that began in Lynchburg and ended in Bedford County, according to authorities. At 1:35 a.m., the Lynchburg Police Department alerted the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office that a vehicle its officers were pursuing on U.S. 460 was heading in Bedford County. The person being pursued was wanted in connection with an assault and battery investigation, according to the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office. Once Bedford County deputies joined the pursuit, the pursued driver, hit a county EMS vehicle twice before he was able to pass it, according to the Sheriff’s Office. In Bedford County, Johnson is charged with felony eluding, felony assault and battery of EMS and driving without a license.

Roanoke Mayor Sherman Lea took a shot Monday at the community and legal system. I’m frustrated, angry, and saddened," said Lea. MARTINSVILLE, Va. – The Martinsville man who authorities say shot a Martinsville police officer on New Year’s Day is out of the hospital and in police custody, according to Virginia State Police. Braxton’s charges are related to the New Year’s Day shooting of Martinsville police officer Michael Panos, who was shot once in the left arm, according to Martinsville city officials. Officials say Panos was treated and released at Wake Forest Baptist Health in North Carolina and continues to recover. Both Panos and Griffith have been assigned to “administrative duties” while the investigation continues, according to Martinsville city officials. Around 9:40 p.m. on Jan. 1, an officer attempted to pull Braxton over; however, he refused, drove away and the officer pursued him, according to the Martinsville Police Department.
