The Lord Botetourt graduate leaves the Cavaliers program as one of the most decorated athletes ever to come through Daleville. Tuesday she is once again a scholarship winner after being named the Allstate VHSL Class 3 female athlete of the year. Veldman won five state championships and had six all-state first team selections while starring at Lord Botetourt in both volleyball and basketball. Dan Rivers Ethan Lewis was also honored as the boys Class 2 athlete of the year.

One of those being senior Miette Veldman. “We had heard a lot about how good the middle school was, but coach (Chuck) Pound and I hadn’t heard about Miette. But volleyball and basketball have gone hand-in-hand for Veldman, and she’s had success on both courts. Veldman has had 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in volleyball and 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in basketball.

Auburn rose to the occasion and soared to win its first state title since 2014. In Class 2, the Radford Bobcats were in the state final for the third consecutive season, hoping to win its second in a row. The teams said this was there first time winning a match that went to five sets this season. Lord Botetourt completes the season with a record of 31-0, with each win coming via straight sets.

Senior Miette Veldman led the Cavaliers with 24 kills, 14 digs and was named the region’s player of the year. Her teammate Ryanna Clark added two aces and 9 kills an coach Julie Conner was named Coach of the Year for Region 3D. Both Hidden Valley and Lord Botetourt advance to the VHSL Class 3 State Tournament. The Cavaliers will host Fort Defiance at 6 p.m. on Saturday and the Titans will travel to Rustburg Saturday for a 6 p.m. start with the Red Devils.
