The head men’s basketball coach at Radford University is set to resume his full duties just over two weeks after being charged with driving under the influence, according to Radford University Athletics.

The Liberty Flames moved to 17-5 on the season after beating Stetson 74-45. The Flames lead the ASUN with an 8-1 conference record.

A composure that only comes with experience showed up in crunch time as Radford men’s basketball team held on to defeat Charleston Southern, 75-70, on Carilion Clinic Court at the Dedmon Center on Saturday afternoon. Leading by as many as 15 points in the second half, the Highlanders (10-9, 4-2 Big South) braced themselves for an unrelenting comeback effort from the Buccaneers (7-10, 3-3 Big South). A 9-0 run by CSU made it a six-point game with 14 minutes to play and the guests kept it close from there on out.

It was a welcome sight for Hokies on Saturday, as Justyn Mutts took to the practice court for a workout in July. A sure sign of Mutts’ return, just weeks after announcing he would be coming back for another season with Virginia Tech. The high flying forward played a huge part in the Hokies postseason run last year, and is excited to be back.

Over 100 boys ages 6-15 swarmed to the Cregger Center this week for a summer day camp with the Roanoke College men’s basketball team. Lead by head coach Clay Nunley, the campers were separated into leagues based on age and skill level where they were able to work on fundamentals, 3 on 3 and 5 on 5 games, and be coached by their favorite players.

Liberty tipped off the 2021-22 season Thursday night in front of a sold-out crowd of 4,034 fans at Liberty Arena, the most fans ever at a game in Liberty Arena. The Flames dominated from start-to-finish, defeating Regent 85-24 for its first win of the season.

Mike Young’s Virginia Tech team seems to get better every year. After a loss in the NCAA tournament, the Hokies return almost their entire team, plus some new additions, and of course, confidence.

Virginia Tech director of athletics Whit Babcock announced Friday that the contracts or letters of appointment of six Tech head coaches have been extended as indicated below. Mike Young (men’s basketball) and John Szefc (baseball) are both under contract through the 2027 seasons, while Dave Cianelli (track and field, cross country) is under contract through 2024. The other three coaches have had their letters of appointment extended through the dates indicated below.

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men’s basketball team fell to Winthrop, 55-47, on Friday night inside the Dedmon Center. Radford held Winthrop to just 24.0 percent (6-for-25) shooting in the first 20 minutes, including a 0-for-7 stat line from long range. On the other end Radford shot 10.5 percent better (34.5 percent) and carried a four-point lead into halftime, 22-18. On the very next possession, a missed 3-pointer by Radford and a defensive rebound by Winthrop forced the Highlanders to foul with 25 seconds. Liberty improves to 13-5 and 5-2 in the ASUN Conference while Jacksonville falls to 9-8 and 3-4 in conference. Jacksonville (30 percent) outshot Liberty (27 percent) from the floor in the opening period but the two went into halftime tied at 22-22. Liberty outscored Jacksonville 26-12 sparked by Chris Parker scoring 11 points along with two assists in the final seven minutes of the game.

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men’s basketball team used stifling defense and held a Hampton team that averages 41.0 percent shooting to just 38.7 percent in a 76-65 win on Tuesday night inside the Dedmon Center. It was the Highlanders’ first lead since the early minutes of the game. Jeffers had 14 first half points, which set a career-high, topping his previous of 12. He ended the game with 16 points on 5-of-5 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers and four free throws. He finished the game with 14 rebounds and 13 points, picking up his second career double-double.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Radford men’s basketball team fell short against Vanderbilt on Saturday night and dropped a 59-50 contest in Memorial Gym. Radford shot 46.2 percent from the floor in the first half and held Vanderbilt to just 34.4 percent. Then Radford cut the lead to three points, 47-44, at the 6:39 mark thanks to Shaquan Jules and Dante Moses. Radford led in bench points, 29-11. Radford turned the ball over 19 times and Vanderbilt scored 17 points off the turnovers.

The Hokies had several runs in the second half, including a nine-point run to go ahead 57-32 at the 14-minute mark. Another run followed a Coppin State timeout late in the second half. Coppin State went on a 9-0 run in the last minutes of the game, but it wasn’t enough to make up the lost ground against the Hokies. The Hokies held the lead throughout the game, scoring 58 points in the second half to win 97-57 against the Eagles. GAME NOTES-The Hokies forced 18 turnovers leading to 30 of the Hokies’ points.

Radford (3-4, 2-0 Big South) outscored Longwood 42-23 in the second half, but the final play of the first half is what ignited the spark. The Highlanders committed 11 first half turnovers but only five in the second half. Radford shot 48.1 percent in the second half and went 4-for-12 from long range. The Highlanders scored 19 points from the charity stripe and 12 came in the second half. As a team, Radford shot 92.3 percent from the free throw line in the second half.

Liberty’s defense made it difficult for Columbia International all throughout the first half, as the Rams managed to make just four field goals (4-22) in the first 20 minutes. RADFORD, Va. – Five players scored in double-figures on Wednesday afternoon as the Radford men’s basketball team topped Mars Hill, 98-50, for its first win of the 2020-21 season. Radford shot 55.6 from the floor and held Mars Hill to 29.6 percent from the floor and a season-low 23 points. The Highlanders went 7-for-10 from the floor, while Mars Hill was 0-for-8 with two turnovers during the run. Ironically, Radford shot 55.6 percent again in the second half and scored the same number of points as it did in the first. PHOENIX Major League Baseball's COVID-19 testing sweep appears to be having some success even as large swaths of the United States continue to struggle with containing the fast-spreading virus. England's Premier League and Spains La Liga were the first to return to action with crowd sound from video games. Brewers infielder Eric Sogard said Thursday that the crowd noise did help step up the competition for some guys during intrasquad games. The Korean baseball league pipes in crowd noise at stadiums so they are not completely silent but it is barely audible during games aired on ESPN. Some fans and broadcasters are leery of artificial crowd noise because it takes away a unique opportunity to hear players' conversations during games this season.

WASHINGTON Donors contributed nearly $480,000 last year to cover Vice President Mike Pences legal expenses from special counsel Robert Muellers probe of Russian meddling in the 2016 elections, according to Pences financial disclosure report. The annual report, released Tuesday, shows that a dozen donors contributed to the trust fund in May of last year. The report states the money was used to pay a bill from McGuireWoods LLP. Many government officials have turned to legal defense funds over the years to finance their legal representation. (AP Photo)OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Oklahoma City honors victims of the 1995 bombing that shocked the nation in what remains the deadliest act of domestic terrorism in U.S. history through a memorial and museum, annual remembrance ceremonies and a marathon. In February, the Oklahoma City Philharmonic performed “Of Thee I Sing,” a symphonic and choral presentation it commissioned. The Oklahoma City Ballet is planning multiple performances, including one choreographed to songs by country singer Vince Gill, a native of Oklahoma. Other commemorations this year include the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder providing free admission once monthly to the museum and wearing special uniforms at some games.

RADFORD, Va. – Backed by Devin Hutchinson’s 17 points and Devine Eke’s double-double, the Radford men’s basketball team topped Presbyterian, 81-71, on Thursday night for its sixth win in a row. 10 of the Highlanders rebounds came on the offensive end, while the Blue Hose only had three. Eke led Radford with 10 rebounds and picked up 10 points for his second double-double this season and fifth of his career. Radford scored 16 points off the turnovers and had 12 second chance points thanks to double-digit offensive rebounds. It’s the third time this season Radford tallied 20 or more assists.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For Miami coach Manny Diaz, the end of 2019 was a disaster. Diaz, a Miami native, knows how they feel. “As a native and having grown up here, I get it better than anybody,” Diaz said. “You've got to set a culture and then you've got to recruit to your culture,” Diaz said. “The model of the culture here at the University of Miami has been set long before me.
