Charges have been certified against a suspect in the 2019 triple murder case in Pittsylvania County, according to court documents.

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. – Last week, Matthew Bernard had a March hearing rescheduled for May; however, that now has been pushed back to the fall. Bernard’s hearing will now be October 29 at 1:30 p.m. in Pittsylvania County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. In January, Matthew Bernard’s hearing was scheduled for March 18; however, the hearing was delayed due to court system changes caused by coronavirus precautions. The order says Matthew Bernard was ruled incompetent to stand trial on Nov. 6. The filing does not say which hospital Bernard was transferred to but states Bernard’s competency can only be restored on an inpatient basis in a hospital. PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. - The Virginia man who police say killed the wife, son and mother-in-law of a minor league baseball pitcher may have operated under some kind of "religious motivation." That's according to a search warrant filed in Pittsylvania County. The Danville Register and Bee reported Friday that police cited the religious aspect while seeking access to Matthew Bernard's cellphones. Authorities say Bernard killed his sister, Emily Marie Bivens, and her 1-year-old son Cullen Bivens, and his mother, Joan Bernard, in late August. Emily Bivens was married to Blake Bivens, a pitcher for the Montgomery Biscuits, an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. - A man accused of killing his mother, sister and her toddler was not arraigned Thursday morning because he has been hospitalized. PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. - Court documents have revealed new details surrounding the Pittsylvania County triple murder earlier this week. On Tuesday, a woman referred to in a criminal complaint as "Ms. Jefferson" told officers that Matthew Bernard came to her house, punched her in the arm then ran away. Jefferson told authorities that shortly after he punched her, she heard multiple gunshots coming from his house next door, 1949 Keeling Drive. Authorities say Jefferson then drove to the house, where she found a body lying in the driveway. The Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office found a woman dead in the driveway of the home as well as a woman and a baby dead inside the home.

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. - Many people have asked what led state troopers to just run around triple murder suspect Matthew Bernard before his arrest Tuesday, rather than being more direct.
