The Maroon Tide travel to Holston for a Class 1 VHSL State semifinal.

Top region seed Galax used a couple of first half scores and a dynamic defensive effort to win the Region 1C title over Parry McCluer 14-0. Javonte Reeves rushed of a first half score and quarterback Ian Ashworth hit Ayden White for a second quarter touchdown pass to account for the scoring. The Maroon Tide (10-2) bottled up the power ground game led by RB John Snider in check throughout the game. Th Blues finish the season 9-4. Galax moves on to take on Region 1D champion Holston in the state semifinals.

Parry McCluer and Galax are two programs with proud postseason histories, but the Maroon Tide history is more recent.

Friday night’s out-of-district game did not go Galax’s way.

Galax defeated Riverheads in 2015 in the for the state championship, while the Gladiators returned the favor in 2019.

Galax beat Holston, ending their season in the state semi-finals, 27-6.

By halftime, Galax was up 21-0 and with no points scored by either team in the second half, that score propelled the Maroon Tide to a Region 1C title.

Galax will be hosting the Region 1C championship next week after beating George Wythe, 41-21, on Friday night.

As he shifts to Pulaski County, Dixon says he feels nervous as he strives to live up to the tradition-rich football program that was once led by VHSL Hall of Famer, Joel Hicks. Its trying to prepare more and understand whats at stake for the community and especially for the kids at Pulaski County, Dixon said. And the other thing is I want to make sure all these kids get to play in really big games, Dixon said.

Coach Mark Dixon's Maroon Tide will open 2019 with 5 starters returning on each side of the ball, with their strength coming in the trenches. Galax said that sour ending to last season fueled their offseason work, and has them ready to roll in 2019. Again it comes back to having a great off-season with a lot at stake because you didn't get over the mountain," Dixon said. Galax opens at Class 2 state power Glenvar to open the season.
