Two lobby workers, described by their union as doormen, were seen on video witnessing the attack but failing to help Kari. This year in New York City, there have been 33 hate crimes with an Asian victim as of Sunday, police said. Joo Han, the deputy director of the Asian American Federation, called the plainclothes patrols a “knee-jerk response” that ignored misgivings she said many people in Asian communities have about law enforcement.

Slick roads are leading to crash across the area, and Roanoke is no exception to that. Authorities said a crash at around 7 a.m. has closed Main Street at Howbert Avenue. The road is set to stay closed until power crews can get the line cleaned up.

MADISON HEIGHTS, Va. – Authorities in Amherst County need your help finding a man they say shot outside of a vehicle in Madison Heights Saturday afternoon. Warrants have been obtained for Zachary Logan Brown for reckless handling of firearm, shooting from a vehicle and driving on a revoked license, according to the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office. It happened around 2:45 p.m. Saturday on Main Street following a report of shots being fired from a vehicle. No one was injured. If you have information that can help Amherst County deputies locate Brown, call 911 or the sheriff’s office at 434-946-9373.

SALEM, Va. – Local businesses dealt with extremely challenging circumstances in 2020, including on Salem’s Main Street. Main Street is the undisputed center of Salem’s small business scene. Jose and Maria Frausto’s restaurant, Muchacho Alegre, has called Main Street home for two years. Salem and VDOT have been revitalizing Main Street with new sidewalks and street signs, and there’s still work to do on the project. Main Street will look a little different at the end of 2021, but the Fraustro’s hope the renewed small-town charm means the eventual return of the pre-pandemic crowd.

Since the middle of November, the entire region has returned to levels similar to those seen in October. Governors have used the declining numbers to justify their divergent approaches to fighting the pandemic, even jousting at times. As the pandemic crept into communities across the Midwest, more people had loved ones, friends or acquaintances fall ill or die. Many health experts warned that the region was ripe for widespread infections, especially as the weather cooled and people gathered inside, making it easier for the coronavirus to spread. Other experts say some pockets of people, such as those who work in meatpacking plants where infections were widespread, had experienced such high rates of infections that the virus has slowed.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. – UPDATE - 9:57 a.m. Dec. 22, 2020Police released the name of the Rocky Mount man who died in Monday’s crash. UPDATE - 9:30 P.M. Dec. 21, 2020One person died in a crash in Franklin County on Monday afternoon. It happened at about 3 p.m. on Route 220 at the Route 40 interchange in Rocky Mount, according to Virginia State Police. Police said the impact of the crash caused both vehicles to go through the median into the southbound lanes of Route 220. Traffic will be detoured off U.S. 220 South onto Main Street and through Rocky Mount.

BEDFORD, Va – One Bedford church is using a new way to help those in need during the coronavirus pandemic. Main Street United Methodist installed a Blessing Box in one of their parking lots. Dawn Compton, the church’s pastor, says it’s one way to continue their ministry while practicing distance. That kept them safe, keeps us safe, and it offers maybe some things that they can use,” Compton said. The Blessing Box is open 24/7 for anyone to take what they need or to drop off donations.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Lynchburg’s Main Street Renewal Project is on the road to completion, even though it’s faced some bumps along the way. Project manager Jim Talian said that while every building on Main Street between 12th and 8th streets is now connected to the new water and electric systems, they’re facing minor setbacks. The new water systems have a higher pressure than the old water systems, so we had to put pressure-reducing valves on all 57 water services. The 800-block of Main Street, scheduled to open by Thanksgiving, is now planned for early December, while the 1000-block, set to reopen by Christmas, has been pushed to late January. Talian said that despite setbacks, the entire project is expected is to be complete by June 2021, two months ahead of schedule.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – As pizzeria workers slice and dice inside Benny Scarpetta’s on Main Street, construction crews continue slicing and dicing the roadway outside. Lynchburg’s Main Street Renewal Project has taken a toll on traffic between 8th and 12th Street over the past year. But in recent months, businesses like Benny Scarpetta’s have hit another roadblock: COVID-19. Businesses have faith in the future of Main Street. “The goal is that it brings in more business and to hear that it’s already on track is super, super nice,” Miles said.

LYNCHBURG, Va. Authorities have arrested a man and are still searching for two suspects after police say the three men forced their way into a Lynchburg hotel room and assaulted the two people inside. According to the Lynchburg Police Department, officers responded to the Travelodge in the 1500 block of Main Street around 1:40 a.m. Officers say the suspects were armed and left with an undisclosed amount of money. Jerry Hancock, 55, has been charged with two counts of robbery, two counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony, entering a dwelling to commit robbery and two counts of assault and battery. The Lynchburg Police Department is searching for the other two men involved, and this case remains under investigation. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact Det.

WASHINGTON The Federal Reserve has opened one of its lending programs to nonprofit groups, including hospitals, educational institutions, and social service organizations. The central bank needs to finalize the legal details before loans to nonprofits can be made. Under the program, banks make loans to borrowers that meet the Fed's criteria, and the central bank then purchases 95% of the loans to reduce the risk to the bank and enable it to engage in more lending. The Fed first proposed terms and criteria for nonprofits last month and adjusted them after receiving public feedback. Many potential business borrowers apparently find the program too complicated and are also struggling to locate participating banks.

Smaller companies, many of which have endured severe damage from the shutdowns forced by the coronavirus, might now find the Main Street program more appealing. Under the Main Street lending program, banks make loans to businesses; the Fed then buys the loans from the banks. Collectively, the changes suggest that the Fed might be having trouble attracting borrowers for the Main Street program. Chair Jerome Powell previously said the Main Street program would start making loans on June 1 or shortly after, but it has not yet done so. On Monday, the Fed said the program would start registering banks soon and will then buy loans shortly afterwards.

ROANOKE, Va. Part of Ninth Street in Lynchburg will be closed this week. The closure will run from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily between Main Street and Commerce Street. The Town of Vinton holds a public hearing about its budget for the next fiscal year. It is expected to keep tuition the same for in- and out-of-state undergraduate and graduate students. The board could also vote to ratify its budget, which includes a five percent decrease in discretionary spending.

SALEM, Va. Drivers will not be able to access I-81 at Exit 137 due to flooding, according to Salem Fire-EMS. Authorities say flooding has closed the intersection of West Main and Wildwood. East and West travel on Main Street is limited, and drivers will not be able to access the interstate from this area. Indiana Street near the Salem Dog Park is also closed.

The Main Street program, announced in March, is expected to begin operations by June 1. That shortfall would likely boost demand for the Fed's Main Street program, Rosengren said. Despite its name, the Main Street program is geared for companies too large for the government's small business lending effort, known as the Paycheck Protection Program. In the interview, Rosengren said the Fed is willing to accept risks with the Main Street program and is prepared to lose money. If there turns out to be little demand for the Main Street program, Rosengren said, it's good news because it suggests that the economy is recovering.

“It means a lot to us,” said Radford High School senior class vice president Sophie Graham about the banners going up around the city to honor seniors. “It’s felt really good to just have the signs up,” said class president Jon Woods. BLACKSBURG, Va. - Two new restaurants are coming to a popular spot in downtown Blacksburg. This summer, Big Al's and Poor Billy's left the downtown building they had occupied on Main Street. The developer said the owner of the local El Rodeo location will have a Mexican restaurant on the second floor called Centro Taco Bar. A Korean barbecue restaurant called MixMix Korea will move in on the first floor. The two locations are planning on opening late this year or early next year.

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Police are investigating a burglary at a popular Lynchburg restaurant. On Sunday at 9:02 p.m., security cameras at the Texas Inn on Main Street show a man broke a window on the 5th Street side of the building. Video shows the man climbing through the window and steal an undisclosed amount of cash from a slot machine. The man was wearing blue jeans, black shoes, a maroon shirt and a purple ski mask at the time of the burglary. This is an ongoing investigation and any additional information will be released as an update to this news release.

LYNCHBURG, Va. - You could be dealing with some delays in Downtown Lynchburg starting on Monday. For the next two years, parts of Main Street will close, as contractors and Appalachian Power are working to replace aging waterlines and update sanitary, storm and electrical systems. Business owners said the project will be a pain, but they are glad customers will have access to their doors. That's going to make it clear for people," Rodney Taylor, the owner of Market at Main, said. City leaders are also offering free two-hour parking in some parking decks during the construction.

LYNCHBURG, Va. - A two-year-long construction project on Main Street is expected to start in10 days. Lynchburg bus rider like Carl Buck said, "What goes through my mind is the bus routes is already screwed up as it is, because it runs on Sundays. By all this construction going on, it's just going to make it worse." Come Sept. 16, buses that stop at Eighth and Main streets and 10th and Main streets will have to take another route. "We are going to to work on an alternative to get a smaller vehicle that can get into that area right there around the 10 and 900 blocks of Main Street during construction," Booth said.

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Get Downtown Lynchburg is back. For the 11th year, city officials will shut down Main Street, where thousands of people are expected to gather. Organizers of "Get Downtown" say patrons can expect to see some new options for food, a beach karaoke party, and a beer garden. We have an ax-throwing trailer. If you travel the Lynchburg Expressway, near the Main Street bridge, you can expect delays this week. Northbound traffic will down to one lane as crews place a sealant on the barrier wall. The Virginia Cooperative Extension's Master Food volunteers class begins today. Lynchburg holds a public meeting about the Main Street Renewal Project. If you want to attend, the meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn on Main Street.

SALEM, Va. - Efforts to revitalize downtown Salem are moving forward with newly approved funding. It will go to the second phase of the project, focusing on Main Street between Union and Broad Streets. City leaders tell 10 News the grant gives them about half the funding needed for phase two. There's a phase one, two, three and four, so we're excited and look forward to starting the process," Salem director of community development Chuck VanAllman said. Meanwhile, VanAllman said expect to see construction starting by the end of the year on phase one, which is down College Avenue from Clay Street past Main Street.
