The drone was hit several times on Oct. 6, 2020, according to police, as it was surveying and identifying potential hazards to aircraft, a safety measure for passengers and crew members, according to aviation officials. The drone was following FAA standards. โThereโre many standards that are basically used to protect surroundings of an airport for safety, for keeping whatโs called โapproach surfacesโ clear,โ explained Vernon Carter, the manager of security and facilities for the Virginia Department of Aviation. The TSA just installed the acrylic shields at Lynchburg Regional Airport. Lynchburg airport officials told 10 News the protectors add another layer of safety. All of these work together to help keep the traveling public safe,โ said Cedric Simon, assistant director of the Lynchburg Regional Airport. The Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport also installed the shields.

At the Lynchburg Regional Airport, officials said they used to have seven daily flights scheduled to and from Charlotte with American Airlines. Now, there are only three or four daily flights.
