Virginia State Police said the crash happened at about 11 p.m. on Route 58A at the Wise County and Lee County Line, but police werenโt notified until 12:08 a.m. early Sunday morning. According to authorities, a 2005 Victory motorcycle was traveling east on Route 58A when it slid off the right side of the highway and hit the guardrail. The motorcyclist, Robert A. Phillips II, 34, of Pennington Gap, was thrown off the motorcycle and died at the scene, police say. The crash remains under investigation.

The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle. The driver, Michael W. Day, 57, of Big Stone Gap, Va., died at the scene.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m., a Lee County sheriffโs deputy was responding to an emergency call and traveling east on Route 58 when a vehicle pulled out in front of the vehicle, according to state police. State police said the deputy swerved to avoid the vehicle, but the two collided on Route 58 in the 48000 block of Veterans Memorial Highway. The driver that pulled out in front of the deputy died from his injuries shortly after he arrived at Lonesome Pine Hospital.

Lee County court records show 42-year-old Robert Gallegos pleaded no contest Wednesday to grand theft and other charges. Besides drug treatment, he was sentenced to four years of probation and must pay restitution. Authorities say Gallegos went for a joyride in June at the Page Field airport in Fort Myers. He eventually crashed the golf cart and fled on foot.
