ROANOKE, Va. – Michael Albert was a VHSL champion in shot put and discus his senior season at James River. I didn’t want to settle for less because I always like to set my goals high,” said Albert. Albert competed in shot put, discus, weight throw and hammer events for the Mountaineers. “Each component breaks down and is so complicated that one small mishap can throw your whole day off,” Albert said. The Patriots ultimately fell 59-35, Highland Springs will play Princess Anne in the state championship. They will see Green Run in the state championship. In Class 3, The Lord Botetourt girls were back in the state semi-finals, this year taking on Booker T. Washington. “I told the three volleyball girls as we were walking in, the last time you guys were here it was a state championship,” head coach Renee Favaro said.

Knights in shining armor descended on the Belmonte Castle in Cuenca, Spain, for the fourth annual National Medieval Combat Tournament. Participants from places like France and Russia, donned in full body armor, recreated medieval battles from the 1500s. The National Artistic Treasury declared the site of the battle, Belmonte Castle, a historic monument by decree in 1931. Belmonte Castle will also host the competition for the second time in 2020. BUCHANAN, Va.- - James River head coach Tim Jennings is an example of never giving up. The former Knights assistant applied for the head coach vacancy in 2015, but ultimately the position was given to Jake Phillips. Jennings said that, in order to get over a few humps, you have to start with the little things. Every football coach, every basketball coach, every baseball coach talks about doing the little things. At practice on Wednesday, it was clear the Knights had bought into the family style culture.

Cave Spring and Christiansburg met for the third time this season Thursday night in what proved to be a hitting affair for the Knights.

The Knights have been battle tested all season and feel confident heading into Friday nights contest against Patrick Henry. Now sitting at 19-4, with a regular season district title already in the case,this once-young team is showing poise to make a deeper run. "These guys have been battle tested," said head coach Jacob Gruse. Cave Spring will battle Patrick Henry for the River Ridge District Tournament title at 6 p.m. Friday.
