(NASA via AP)MOSCOW – A U.S.-Russian crew landed safely Friday in the steppes of Kazakhstan following a stint on the International Space Station and was greeted with extra precautions due to the coronavirus. Meir and Skripochka spent 205 days in space, with Meir carrying out the first three all-women spacewalks with crewmate Christina Koch, who returned from space in February. Restrictions on international flights imposed by Kazakhstan required the long drive, said Vyacheslav Rogozhnikov, a Russian medical official who oversaw the crew’s return. Skripochka will spend three weeks under observation at a medical facility at the Star City cosmonaut training center outside Moscow, Russian space corporation Roscosmos said. On Thursday, the Russian government coronavirus headquarters reported the first infection at the Star City, which serves as the main hub for pre-flight training of U.S., Russian and other international crew members of the International Space Station.

Meir, alongside fellow astronaut and friend Christina Koch successfully conducted the first all-female spacewalk outside of the space station on Friday. During the spacewalk, Koch was actually able to ride on the end of the robotic arm, something not many astronauts have the opportunity to do. Meir arrived on the space station for her first six-month mission at the beginning of October. Koch and Meir are included in the list of 12 women that could be the first female astronaut on the moon in 2024. She can check "becoming an astronaut" and "going for a spacewalk" off her "future plans" list from high school.

The announcement was made Friday during a briefing by the agency previewing 10 upcoming spacewalks by astronauts on the International Space Station. For the intended spacewalk in March, Koch was going to be paired with astronaut Anne McClain, who has since returned to Earth. The tweet also showed an image of pairings for the upcoming spacewalks. In addition to her first spacewalk with Koch, she will also conduct a spacewalk with European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano.
