ROANOKE, Va. – Local schools districts are responding to the latest restrictions from the VHSL on high school sports. The VHSL said that athletes should wear masks while playing, and if they can’t, they shouldn’t play. William Byrd High School Athletic Director Jason Taylor said that athletes already wear masks while practicing and everyone will do what it takes, but he’d like more guidance about what kind of masks the students need to wear. “Whatever VHSL puts together, whatever the governor puts together, our kids want to play, we’re going to abide by those rules,” said Taylor. Due to a new cap on spectators at 25 people, schools in Franklin County are not allowing fans to attend games.

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – A local health expert warned that it is too dangerous to for high school athletes to play close contact sports, just weeks before the season is supposed to start. William Byrd High School student Ethan Tinsley has been looking forward to his senior year and earning himself a college football scholarship. “Where we are with our numbers, every school district right now is in the red. Morrow says she’s spoken with local school district officials and ultimately the ball is in their court to decide whether or not kids can play. “I think that they’ll make the right decisions and I think they’ll make the cautious decisions and I think they’ll have to have more discussions about it," said Taylor.

The Virginia High School League is no longer considering season proposals with fall high school football included. The decision to push back football was expected by area athletic directors, such as Lord Botetourts Chuck Pound and William Byrds Jason Taylor. I think all of us wish we were playing football in the fall, along with the other fall sports, added Taylor. Model three at least gives all of our teams and all of our students some hope of having a season, Taylor said. However, high school athletics budgets will likely suffer because of the lack of football, according to Pound.
