At about 4:30 a.m. on the Exit 72 ramp toward I-77 North, a 2006 Kenworth tractor-trailer ran off the left side of the road, hit the guardrail and flipped over, according to state police. The driver, Kenneth Nelson, 55, of Forest, Ohio, died at the scene.

A BP gas station is at the intersection of those two roads. The remains, which appear to be that of a woman, were found at the edge of a gravel lot adjacent to the BP Station, according to police. The body has been transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Roanoke for examination, autopsy and positive identification. Anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the immediate area or has any information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Virginia State Police at 276-228-3131 or by email at questions@vsp.virginia.gov.

Highway 58 at the intersection of U. S. Highway 501 due to high water. A detour is in place using U. S. Highway 360. An alternate route is 460 west to Princeton to Interstate 77, then Wolf Creek Road to Narrows. In Franklin County, part of Route 116 is closed in the Coopers Cove area because part of the road collapsed. The lane closure is about 1.5 miles east of Windridge Parkway and one mile west of Coopers Cove Road.

The impact of that crash caused all three vehicles to run off the right side of the southbound lanes and strike the guardrail in separate places. Then the Pontiac reentered the southbound lanes and rear-ended a second tractor-trailer already stopped in the traffic. Gadson, as well as the driver of the Lincoln and the other tractor-trailer, were all wearing seat belts and not hurt in the crash. Police say the driver of the Pontiac, Robert Weatherman, 74, of Galax, was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene.
