ORIGINAL STORYDrivers can expect delays headed through Rockbridge County on I-81 North on Monday evening. A vehicle fire is causing traffic near mile marker 192.3. As of 6:21 p.m., all northbound lanes were closed, and traffic was backed up about six miles, according to VDOT. Traffic is being detoured onto westbound I-64, onto US-11, and back onto northbound I-81.

Construction at the I-64 and US-29 interchange is set to start next week, according to the Virginia Dept. Officials say construction on the two projects, near Charlottesville, will improve safety and improve traffic flow in the area. One of the projects will reconfigure the I-64 interchange and eliminate the loop ramp from southbound US-29 to I-64 eastbound, according to VDOT. The current layout has two weaves for cars exiting and entering I-64, and has reportedly been a factor in several crashes. The second project is set to add an option lane, which is a through lane or right-merge lane, at the Fountain Avenue exit from US-29N.

According to WAVY, they received a call at 7:49 a.m. for a crash on I-64 westbound near the Queens Creek Bridge. Peter Glagola with Riverside Regional Medical Center tweeted that they were treating 35 patients from the wreck. Police confirmed several people are injured and two of them have injuries that are considered life-threatening. The Virginia Department of Transportation tweeted that all westbound lanes are closed for the incident.
