Two residents displaced after house fire in Roanoke CountyROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – Two Roanoke County residents have been displaced after their house caught fire Friday night. At about 7:45 p.m., Roanoke County Fire and Rescue responded to the 8500 block of Summer View Drive in the Hollins area for reports of a house fire. Upon arrival, crews found fire and smoke coming from the front corner of a one-story home. Officials said the two adults inside the home were able to escape unharmed. The two residents were displaced and are staying with neighbors, according to the fire department.

ROANOKE, Va. – Hollins University recently announced it will not be participating in any high risk spring sports--women’s volleyball, women’s soccer, women’s indoor track and field or women’s lacrosse-- due to COVID concerns. This comes after it decided in December to opt out of the basketball season. Protocols that Hollins plans to continue to adhere to. When you’re not competing it’s hard to practice for weeks and weeks. A full time out so to speak, for what could be a great run for the Hollins next season.

Several walking paths are set to be built in the area with construction starting this spring. HOLLINS, Va – Several projects in hopes of making the Hollins area in Roanoke County more pedestrian-friendly are almost done. Work just finished up on a new traffic signal and crosswalk at the intersection of Lila Drive and Plantation Road. The plans were approved as part of the Hollins area plan in 2009 after drivers faced issues turning on to plantation safely. Several walking paths are set to be built in the area with construction starting this spring.

HOLLINS, Va. – Roanoke County took the next step forward in reimagining the Hollins area on Tuesday night. The board of supervisors approved the new area plan tonight. Unlike the 419 Town Center plan, the Hollins plan is focused on transportation and housing, not as much on commercial districts. Board vice-chair Phil North says the area is growing and has good anchor companies so housing also is a top priority. But he was neither for nor against the plan..he just wanted to let the board know his family’s farm was not for sale.

Roanoke County leaders are presenting their plan to the public for the last time on Tuesday, before it gets approvedThe idea is to make Hollins a safer, more walking and biking-friendly area with lots of shops and restaurants and places to live. County leaders have spent the last two years getting public input and creating this plan, which they hope will attract more businesses and residents to move to the region. The board of supervisors are holding a public hearing at 7 p.m. Tuesday. They will then vote whether or not to adopt the plan for Hollins into the countys comprehensive plan.

HOLLINS, Va – A Hollins restaurant owner has some work ahead of him after Wednesday’s heavy rain caused flooding. The damage came after recently reopening after months of being closed due to COVID-19. Don Ho’s owner Donnie Sutliff said he has not seen water damage this bad in nearly 20 years. He estimates about 5 inches of rain got inside and caused damage to the restaurant. Don Ho’s has big plans in place to celebrate its 20th anniversary next month, but Sutliff said the restaurant will remained closed until further notice.

HOLLINS, Va. – COVID-19 has made conventional birthday parties nearly impossible, but Lillian Barton’s family found a way to celebrate her 90th birthday. Barton was surprised with a parade of family and friends Sunday afternoon. Loved ones drove to her house and dropped off signs and gifts in her honor. “I just thought it was a coincidence, and then the cars kept coming," Barton said. "I knew my daughter had gotten this all together to tell everybody how old I am.”

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. - Students who would have been forced out of Hollins University for their gender identity can now receive a degree from the all women's school. The university will also consider admitting trans women (men who transition to a woman). Still, nonbinary students and trans men (women who transition to a man) are not eligible for admission. Requiring a student to transfer is inconsistent with Hollins' focus on compassionately supporting our students and their personal development." "How is Hollins ready to support, not only trans women who they're going to admit, because they have been admitting trans women," Nanney said, "but specifically trans men and nonbinary students that are now not forced to leave?"

Hollins University students are moving into new homes this week. After eight years of planning, fundraising and construction, the university opened Phase 1 of the new student apartment village.
