The COVID-19 pandemic is canceling this year’s spring game for Virginia Tech, according to Virginia Tech Director of Athletics Whit Babcock. “Regrettably, given the current restrictions in place and out of concern for the health and well-being of our community, our student-athletes and our fans, we have made the decision to not have a spring football game,” Babcock said. “We realize this is disappointing for many and certainly for our football team, but we believe that it is the proper decision for the Virginia Tech community and the town of Blacksburg. “Lane Stadium was not the same without Hokie Nation last year,” said head coach Justin Fuente.

Virginia Tech and Virginia-based brewery Hardywood Park Craft Brewery have teamed up for a new Hokie beer. The beer has been dubbed the “Fightin’ Hokies Lager” — a Munich-style Helles lager that comes in at 5% alcohol by volume. “We are excited that research developed on Virginia Tech soil will be brought to market with proceeds providing scholarships for our students, enabling the expansion of research programs in our highly regarded food science program and fueling Virginia’s local economy,” said Dan Sui, vice president for research and innovation. Officials say that the beer is set to hit shelves in Virginia and the DC-metro area next spring.

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The first Virginia Tech home football game of the season is an annual holiday for Hokie fans, but only a handful of them got to experience the action inside of Lane Stadium this season. Virginia Tech only admitted 1,000 fans into the stadium due to COVID-19 precautions, which left many students looking for a different way to watch their team. “I’ve been to a couple of games in person and nothing beats it,” said Virginia Tech freshman Chase Jaramillo. “Me and my friends are still treating this game as regularly as we can.”Many of the fans inside of Lane Stadium were friends or family of the players. Virginia Tech students on campus mostly chose between three options.

BLACKSBURG, Va – On Saturday night, the Virginia Tech Hokies will take the field for their first game of the season at Lane Stadium. Any other year, Hokie fans would tell you can’t have football without tailgating, Enter Sandman and a stadium full of cheering students. “College football and game day and tailgating is such a deep valued tradition here at Virginia Tech we always look forward to the fall to be able to do that we’ve been doing it for decades, but this is an unusual year,” Virginia Tech Spokesperson Mark Owczarski said. Because of COVID-19, there will be several health precautions and restrictions when the Hokies take the field against NC State. Virginia Tech leaders agree that they are looking forward to the day when things can return to normal, but safety is the top priority for now.

Caleb Farley sent a video to ESPN, announcing his decision to not play college football this upcoming season. I am opting out due to uncertain health conditions and regulations and all the other opt-outs going on in football right now. So thank you Virginia Tech, my coaches, teammates and anyone else who has supported me in the past. Schefter said that Farley is a projected first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Farley, who was a redshirt junior, was named First Team All-ACC last season and was tied for second in the league with four interceptions.

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Hokie coaches and their families are stepping up in the fight against COVID-19. Virginia Teach head football coach Justin Fuente and wife Jenny, along with men’s basketball head coach Mike Young and wife Margaret, donated $10,000 each to the Carilion Clinic Foundation COVID-19 Support Fund. The $20,000 will provide meals for employees at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center (CNRV). “The support of these coaches and their families means so much to us,” said Bill Flattery, CEO of CNRV. “Their generosity speaks volumes to the community pride present in the New River Valley, and we are grateful for their support.”Money from the fund helps provide snacks and meals to health care workers.

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech ice hockey team may just have the cutest fan youve ever seen. In a video taken before the VT vs Radford University game, the team of suited-up players can be seen giving fist bumps to a very excited little girl. Sawyer Mullen is the daughter of coach Joey Mullen and his wife Ashley Mullen. Seen dressed in Hokie gear from head to toe, she excitedly is reaching out to each player to give a fist bump as they head out on the ice. Ashley said in a social media post that Sawyer is in love with the whole team.
