BUENA VISTA, Va. – The last time Parry McCluer boys basketball was in a state title game, Talen Roberts wasn’t even born yet. Head coach Mike Cartolaro helped lead Saturday’s opponent Altavista to four state championships before returning to his alma mater in 2016. “You go a day at a time, a game at a time, you set your goals and try to accomplish those,” Cartolaro said. “It is kind of strange, it’s a game between us and them and I have to keep it that way,” Cartolaro said. ROANOKE, Va. – It was a busy night in Southwest Virginia with nearly a dozen area teams competing in the VHSL basketball state semifinals. Starting with Class 5 girls action, Patrick Henry dispatched visiting Potomac Falls 61-37 to advance to the program’s first state final. “Very blessed to have the players I have, very lucky to have Savannah Derey here for every game I’ve ever coached,” Hedrick explained. AdIn Pulaski County, the girls basketball Region D champions hosted Loudon Valley, who won the Region C title. In girls Class 2 action, Glenvar had a tall task in trying to topple defending Class 2 Champion Gate City.

RADFORD, Va. – After a plethora of Region title games cancelled on Friday, the Glenvar girls were able to travel to Radford for a Region 2C showdown. The Bobcats lead until the third quarter, where the Highlanders were able to pull away thanks in part to guard Olivia Harris, who had 13 points that quarter, 35 overall. “It started out, we had this mentality we would lose at first. We put it together, we had a talk in the locker room, got it straight, and got the dub,” Harris said. “I’ve been working on this the whole year, but we just felt like we needed to get a state dub this year, and it’s my final year, so I’m really excited to get it this year.”Glenvar will now travel to Gate City on Wednesday for the Class 2 State Semifinal.
