PULASKI COUNTY, Va. – UPDATEAuthorities have named the two man that died after a boating accident on Claytor Lake in Pulaski County. Faron Gardner, 67, of Hillsville and Reginald Sizemore, 70, of Dublin were on Claytor Lake when their boats collided, according to the Virginia Dept. Authorities said alcohol was not a factor in the accident, and neither of the men were wearing life jackets. ORIGINAL STORYTwo people are dead after a boating accident on Claytor Lake, near Peak Creek, according to Conservation Police. AdMultiple agencies responded to Peak Creek, which is about half a mile away from where the incident took place on Claytor Lake.

CARROLL COUNTY, Va. – A 21-year-old man died Saturday in a crash on Floyd Pike in Carroll County, according to Virginia State Police. Both the driver, Timothy Davis, 20, of Dugspur, and the passenger, Dakota Justice, 21, of Hillsville, were ejected from the vehicle. Justice died at the scene, while Davis was taken to a hospital to be treated for serious injuries. Virginia State Police said charges are pending and that the crash remains under investigation. HILLSVILLE, Va. – A local mayor said his battle with COVID-19 caused him to take the disease more seriously. Hillsville mayor Greg Crowder tested positive for COVID-19 and said, “This is absolutely awful and it tortures you,” in a Facebook post on Tuesday. “I’m sharing this so maybe someone with the mind set I had will give the virus the respect that it deserves, not to fear it but respect it,” Crowder wrote. Crowder said before he got COVID-19 he “kind of liked” his odds against it, in terms of the death and hospitalization rates. Crowder ended his post with a warning to others to wear masks and wash your hands “every chance you get.”

ROANOKE, Va. – Some places, including Hillsville and Lynchburg, have seen more than a month’s worth of rain within the past 24 to 30 hours. WYTHEVILLE, Va. – A North Carolina man was arrested in Wytheville in connection with a vehicle smash and grab at a hotel on Oct. 23, according to Wytheville Police. According to police, the Wythe County deputies pursued the vehicles into Carroll County where the Carroll County deputies took over the pursuit. The vehicle was finally stopped after crossing into Surry County, North Carolina. Authorities said they found items inside Clay’s vehicle that were taken from the Holiday Inn Express vehicle smash and grabs earlier. According to police, Clay was taken into custody and is facing charges in Surry County, Carroll County, Wythe County and Wytheville.

HILLSVILLE, Va. – A star of the hit show “The Dukes of Hazzard” stopped by Carroll County to attend the Trucker’s Parade Against Cancer event on Saturday. Actor John Schneider and his wife Alicia Schneider, who is currently battling breast cancer, came to participate in the 14th annual parade to meet with families, sponsors and volunteers. The event had about 75 trucks with banners in memory of those with cancer. Organization officials said that the parade raised over $8,700 for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of the Twin Counties.

HILLSVILLE, Va – Hillsville town leaders have announced they will not be issuing permits or taking part in the town’s annual flea market this year. “The Town of Hillsville’s plans were to continue the Flea Market 2020 following the regulations set by the governor of Virginia’s orders. She said the restaurant depends on the money from the flea market to survive the later half of the year. “They’ll come and eat before the flea market or after the flea market, so they’ll come and eat and it brings a lot of business in,” Hawks said. The town said it will still be issuing yard sale permits for residents.

HILLSVILLE, Va. An investigation is underway in Hillsville after police say a masked individual broke into a local business with a rock. Investigators with the Hillsville Police Department reported that the incident occurred last Wednesday around 4 a.m. at Contenders Pizzeria & Arcade, located in Hickory Hills Shopping Center. According to the report, security cameras at the business show one individual exit a white SUV with black rims while wearing a mask, hoodie and gloves. The security video shows the individual going straight to the cash register, and then proceeding straight to the back office. The vehicle went to Cockerhams at Exit 14 and met with a pickup truck, the report said.

Hillsville, Va. – In a sad update to a story we reported last week, the 104-year-old Carroll County grandmother died after a weeks long battle with coronavirus. Mary Jett battled the virus for 38 days, according to her grandson Franklin Jett. Mary lived at Hillsville Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Carroll County. As of June 22, VDH is reporting there are 63 coronavirus cases in the facility and five people have died. Unfortunately, it’s been a lot longer,” said Franklin Jett, her grandson when we spoke with him June 16.

HILLSVILLE, Va. – The last time the Carroll County girls basketball team lost a game was around this time last year. “I don’t know that we ever talked about any streaks or anything like that,” head coach Marc Motley said. The team also has never had an undefeated season before, so it could be a year of firsts for the Cavaliers. “I don’t want to get content.”While competing may be missed for awhile, the extra time allows Carroll County to tweak their game plan and get ready for region play. I’m excited to see the crowd and the feeling of playing in regions, I think that’s really exciting.”“Teams are going to watch you on film, we know that,” Motley said.

CARROLL COUNTY, Va. – Family and friends will gather to remember a mother of three who was killed in Carroll County just days before Christmas. A funeral service for 30-year-old Cassandra “Lauren” Bolen will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville. Visitation will be held at the same location on Saturday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.Lauren Bolen was found dead in Hillsville on Sunday. Authorities arrested her husband, 36-year-old Marcus Bolen, in connection with her death, after obtaining warrants for murder and felony child neglect, according to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office. 10 News spoke with some of Lauren’s neighbors and friends who described her as “upbeat, bubbly and smiling,” with a huge heart for her three daughters.

HILLSVILLE, Va. - What may have once been a TV or movie prop could have made its way into your wallet. Police in Hillsville say that "movie money" has been turning up at local businesses. The money looks and feels real, but says "Motion Picture Use Only" somewhere on the bills. Some bills have red markings that may look like characters from an Asian language. Hillsville police say to be extra cautious when accepting and handling large denomination bills, and to report any attempted use of these bills to authorities.
