More than a dozen bus drivers with Greater Lynchburg Transit Company (GLTC) have concerns about working during the pandemic. They have not received hazard pay or any time of bonus of any recognition of what theyre doing, said Clifford Headrick, executive board member of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1493. The Greater Lynchburg Transit Company is dealing with a staff shortage because its employees say they don't feel safe at work.

From now until further notice only nine people can ride on Lynchburg city buses. Transportation leaders told 10 News should the bus be full they will pick up the passengers left behind. Booth asked people not to ride the buses unless itโs for an essential reason.

Lynchburg bus rider like Carl Buck said, "What goes through my mind is the bus routes is already screwed up as it is, because it runs on Sundays. By all this construction going on, it's just going to make it worse." Come Sept. 16, buses that stop at Eighth and Main streets and 10th and Main streets will have to take another route. "We are going to to work on an alternative to get a smaller vehicle that can get into that area right there around the 10 and 900 blocks of Main Street during construction," Booth said.

This comes after some City Council members were split and didn't approve of funding a $9-million sidewalk for that community. City leaders who represent residents along Florida Avenue are looking to construct a new sidewalk because they say it's unsafe for people who have to walk. The $9.9 million proposal eventually passed 5-2 in a City Council meeting on May 7. (We will) continue gathering information before we finalize and report back to the GLTC Board and City Council."
