Crews were able to find the hikers by 10:15 p.m. and they said it took around 45 minutes to get them out of the mines. The hikers and the rescue crews were back at the command post by 11:30 p.m. Authorities said that around 60 first responders worked the incident.

Authorities said the call for the fire, which was at 1825 Pot Rock Road, came in around 11 p.m. Wednesday. When crews arrived, they said the home was fully involved and there was also a half-acre brush fire. Neighbors told authorities that the home was not occupied and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to the Galax Fire Department.

While trying to rescue the cats the woman who lived in the home cut her hands and was later treated at the scene. As firefighters worked to stop the blaze, they were unable to save any of the cats inside the mobile home.

Authorities say the family of five was evacuated to dry ground by a Galax Fire Department boat crew before the call became an emergency. They were reportedly put up in a hotel by the Red Cross. The power was disconnected from a second home in the area due to a flooded basement.
