Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative estimates up to two-thirds of its customers in Halifax and Pittsylvania County were without power at some point after this past weekend’s ice storm. “I’ve been here for more than 30 years, but we’ve seen more damage from this storm than most of us here can remember,” said Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative’s David Lipscomb. AdLipscomb said the ice made it especially challenging to repair power lines, and he’s grateful Thursday’s ice storm did not cause more complications. “Thursday’s storm had the potential to make us have to start all over again.”Lipscomb believes Mecklenburg Electric will have all of its customers reconnected by the end of the weekend.

Police responded to East Gretna Road shortly before 7:30 p.m. after a 2016 Kia Sol rear-ended a horse-drawn carriage near Hermosa Road, according to Virginia State Police. One of the two passengers in the carriage, Joseph Swarey, 19, of Gretna, died at the scene. The driver, 21-year-old Moses Swarey, and other passenger, 18-year-old Susie Swarey, were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The driver of the Kia, Ronald King, 68, of Gretna, was also taken to a hospital for treatement.

It happened in Tuesday at around 2:30 p.m. on Rockford School Road in Gretna. State police said a 2005 Cadillac STS was dead south on Rockford School Road when it ran off the left side of the road, hit a mailbox and then hit the front porch of the home. The driver, Robert Withers, III, 69, of Gretna was taken to Centra Lynchburg General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Charges are pending and the crash remains under investigation.

Crews said they arrived to find a fuel tanker tractor-trailer crashed on its side with a fuel leak and partially blocking the road. Several other crews were dispatched to help with the fuel leak, including the Regional Hazardous Materials Team from the Danville Fire Department. Members of our regional Hazardous Materials team are on scene in Pittsylvania County for an overturned tanker. Fuel is being transferred to a separate fuel tanker on site.

Clays mobile home on Blue Ridge Drive in Gretna is now just a charred shell. According to radio communication between first responders at the scene Wednesday night, Clay was found inside the home near the front door. The Gretna Fire Department was first on scene and advised that there was a single-wide mobile home fully involved. They made a quick exterior attack and then quickly moved interior, said Pittsylvania County Deputy Public Safety Coordinator Mike Lee.

Perniece White came across a pickup truck on fire, called 911 and then realized her neighbor was trapped inside. Risking her life for another with no fire training earned her a prestigious Carnegie Hero Medal. "It means a lot to me just to know that my peers thought this much of me," said White.

Perneice White is a member of the Gretna Rescue Squad. She saw a pickup truck on fire going home from work last march. She did not have burning vehicle experience, but jumped into action and pulled the man out of the car. The Carnegie Medal is awarded to people who risk their lives to an extraordinary degree saving or attempting to save the lives of others.

His family created the Justin Harris Memorial Fire and Rescue Benefit after he died in a traffic accident in 2002. His two horses in the trailer behind him also died. All proceeds from the 16th annual event go to the Gretna Fire and Rescue Department. This is one of the biggest fundraisers for the department all year.
