ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas Rangers hired Chris Young as executive vice president and general manager Friday, bringing the Major League Baseball executive home to work under president of baseball operations Jon Daniels, the club's GM since 2005. The return to Texas comes after Young interviewed for the GM opening with the New York Mets, who recently abandoned an effort to hire a president of baseball operations to focus on the GM search. Young was the senior vice president in charge of on-field operations and the umpires with MLB. He worked closely with the Rangers on baseball issues related to construction of Globe Life Field, which opened this past season. “Chris Young’s background and experiences will be a huge asset to our baseball operations group," Daniels said.

UAW strikers say they will continue to hold out until their leaders say a deal with GM is good enough. GM made its most recent offer on Monday, and then the UAW countered that offer on Friday. Regardless, picketers say it's not good enough until their UAW leaders say it is. "Generally, if it's leaked, the corporations put it out there to cause issues between the members and UAW. As for a comment from the UAW on the details of GM's offer, UAW leaders say there has been no official communications about content of offers, and leaking may be attributed to people trying to stir the pot.

As the strike entered its fifth day, many are laying off workers who build those parts and other supplies for GM. Supplier Nexteer Automotive, which makes steering systems, told the Detroit Free Press that it was forced to temporarily lay off workers due the the GM strike. Nearly 50,000 hourly workers at GM have been on strike since early Monday, and it appears they'll stay out for at least the next few days. The union and company are also split on GM's use of temporary hourly workers, as well as about wages and benefits.
