Before the virus paralyzed the economy in March, the number of people applying for unemployment benefits each week had typically amounted to roughly 225,000. "Thanksgiving seasonals likely explain the drop'' in jobless claims last week, Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, wrote in a research note. The total number of people who are continuing to receive traditional state unemployment benefits declined to 5.5 million from 6.1 million. But it also indicates that many of the unemployed have used up their state benefits, which typically expire after six months.

Two local food banks could have to start shutting down if they don't get more volunteers soon. Heavenly Manna in Rocky Mount has had to rely on the same small group of volunteers since March. Without more volunteers, the food bank may have to periodically cancel its weekly distribution events because the volunteers could be too tired to work. His Cupboard in Boones Mill may have to start shutting down soon because there may not be enough volunteers to help run it at times. Heavenly Manna Director Frances Davis said shutting down would be a huge blow to the food bank and the hundreds of people it serves each month.
