The Floyd Country Store announced that its Friday Night Backyard Jamboree is returning to outdoor in-person performances next month. Last summer, the store held the Jamboree outdoors for a few months before winter. Prior to July 2020 and since late last year, all other Jamborees have been only virtual. If you can’t make it, the shows will still be live-streamed on the Floyd Country Store’s Facebook page or YouTube.

The school usually sees an uptick in interest in lessons and workshops at the start of the year. From the fiddle to the banjo and even the mandolin, Handmade Music School teaches the region’s traditional music, oftentimes on locally handmade instruments. Continuing lessons and workshops amidst a pandemic is special to Handmade Musical School because it’s supporting musicians. Learning to play a new instrument can be a little intimidating but Small doesn’t want that to stop anyone interested.

You can see the houses in-person at Floyd Country Store but you don’t have to go inside, they are on display in the store’s window. The country store even made a house of their own outside of the contest. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the famous Friday Night Jamborees are on hold. And thats what the store depends on, is the shopping and the restaurant sales, to be able to keep it going. So in the absence of that, the stores having a hard time, said Lydeana Martin with Friends of the Floyd Country Store. Martin said sales were down about 80% for the first two months after the COVID-19 pandemic prompted lockdowns and stay-at-home orders.

So after moving the show online, they’ve changed things up again to try to get people back to the music. There’s pickin’ and dancing and a whole lot of fun in downtown Floyd on Friday. Even if things looked a little different than they usually do, Floyd Country Store owner Dylan Locke said the show must go on. The weekly Friday Night Jamboree is usually inside, but Locke had to cancel it due to the pandemic.

Right now, there are pictures in the storefront windows that spell out L-O-V-E. Each letter is made up of pictures taken inside. While the pandemic has shut down the usual Friday night music and dancing gatherings, the owners said it’s the perfect message for a hurting world. It's leaving their differences at the door and it's celebrating life in simple ways like playing music, dancing, having conversations, eating good food and that's what we represent at the Floyd County Store,” said Dylan Locke, Floyd Country Store owner. Locke said the Blue Ridge Mountains staple started working on the store front in response to COVID-19, but it has taken on a whole new meaning.
