President Joe Biden won the Democratic caucuses in Hawaii on Wednesday, propelling him closer to winning his party’s nomination again after romping through the Super Tuesday contests earlier this week.
Justice Courtney Hudson has been reelected to the Arkansas Supreme Court in a victory that will also hand Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders a new appointment to the court. Hudson defeated Circuit Judge Carlton Jones in the race for position two on the seven-member court. The two were running to replace Justice Cody Hiland, who Sanders appointed to the court last year. The race for chief justice remained too early to call Tuesday night, with three justices and a former lawmaker vying for the seat or a spot in a November runoff for it.
Alabama has heated primary battles in two congressional districts on Super Tuesday. Eighteen candidates — 11 Democrats and seven Republicans — are running in Alabama's newly revamped 2nd Congressional District. Federal judges redrew the district after ruling Alabama's prior congressional map undermined the voting strength of Black residents. The primaries will decide the matchups for the November election. Democrats are hoping to flip the seat. Republicans hope to maintain control. In the 1st Congressional District, two Republican congressmen — Rep. Jerry Carl and Rep. Barry Moore — are facing off in a primary showdown. Moore challenged incumbent Carl after being drawn out of his current district.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has officially locked up the GOP nomination for a third term and awaits the winner of a wide field of Democratic challengers. Cruz had no major primary opponent. Nine Democrats are running for the chance to unseat him in November, including U.S. Rep. Colin Allred and state Sen. Roland Gutierrez. Democrats see Cruz's seat as one of their best chances to flip a Senate seat this year even though a Democrat hasn't won a statewide race in Texas in 30 years.
