– Friendly's Restaurants, the 85-year-old East Coast dining chain known for its Fribble milkshakes and ice cream sundaes, is filing for bankruptcy protection. It joins a growing list of well-established restaurant chains that are failing due to an unchecked pandemic in the United States. FIC will sell essentially all of its assets to the restaurant company Amici Partners Group. The pandemic has hit the restaurant sector very hard, particularly chains like Friendly's that rely on people sitting down at tables. Traffic at full-service restaurant chains in the U.S. plummeted 48% in the April-June period, according to NPD Group.

The storm system sending that moisture in from the East Coast will give rise to scattered downpours. This is the one part of the area that stands the best chance of heavy rain throughout the day. Well trade the long sleeves for bathing suits throughout the day, as temperatures rise into the low to mid 80s by the afternoon. The heaviest rain will likely be east of here, but we still expect scattered showers and storms to develop and move east to west. At least six people are dead and millions without power in the wake of Hurricane Isaias. The intense storm left a long trail of destruction along the East Coast after making landfall in North Carolina late Monday, then rapidly pushing north. The effects of the storm were felt hundreds of miles from the point where it made landfall. This is much more severe flooding than we've seen recently," said Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Captain Adam Thiel. In North Carolina the storm spawned a tornado that swept through a mobile home park, killing two people.

ROANOKE, Va. Just a day after Isaas wreaked havoc up the East Coast, experts at Colorado State University released an update to their forecast for the 2020 Atlantic tropical season. The forecast now calls for an extremely active Atlantic season. Weve yet to reach the historic peak of the season, which falls between August 20th and October 10th. Frequency of tropical systems in the AtlanticWith CSUs updated forecast, we would run out of names. The current practice is to start using Greek letters once we run out of names.

New Hurricane Isaias kept on a path early Friday that’s expected continue on toward our country’s East Coast by the weekend. Isaias had maximum sustained winds of 80 mph Friday morning and was centered about 15 miles south-southwest of Great Inagua Island in the Bahamas, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Phonetically, it’s “ees-ah-EE-ahs.”There are different ways to pronounce Isaias, but for the sake of a named storm, the National Hurricane Center has informed meteorologists this pronunciation will be the standard. A hurricane warning was in effect for the northwestern Bahamas, including Andros Island, New Providence, Eleuthera, Abaco Islands, Berry Islands, Grand Bahama and Bimini. The National Hurricane Center was monitoring two other disturbances Friday morning, both over the tropical Atlantic Ocean.

WASHINGTON Military planes will conduct flyovers in a handful of major cities along the East Coast as part of this year's July Fourth celebration amid the coronavirus pandemic. From there, the military planes will join with other aircraft participating in the Salute to America" over Washington, D.C. Washington has held an Independence Day celebration for decades. President Donald Trump added to the mix of events last year with a speech and a display of tanks and warplanes. It said the president will deliver remarks, and the ceremony will include music, military demonstrations and flyovers. Trump plans to kick off Independence Day festivities with a showy display at Mount Rushmore the day before.

Rounds of heavy rain will then continue into the early morning hours, leading to yet another flood threat. FutureTracker - 8 a.m. ThursdayBetween Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, however, we expect a widespread half an inch to inch and a half of rain. So while not everyone will get wet, a localized flood threat still exists during that time. Like Thursday, whatever pops will move slowly and will add to the localized flood threat. Between Wednesday evening and Saturday afternoon, a widespread 1-3 of rain is forecast (half of that comes late Wednesday to Wednesday night).

We’re north of a warm front Wednesday placing us on the cool and mostly cloudy side of things. The air will likely rise more toward the New River Valley, offering the shot for a few light showers at any given time. The National Hurricane Center has placed 70% odds on our first named storm of the season developing off the East Coast over the weekend. Once it does move away from the East Coast, a large dome of high pressure will take over the eastern U.S. This means summer-like heat is likely through Memorial Day weekend.

WASHINGTON, DC – On Monday the Supreme Court started on what could be a landmark case affecting pipelines in our area and across the East Coast. An environmental group is challenging the permit issues to the Atlantic Coast Pipeline to cross the Appalachian Trail, and it could affect the Mountain Valley Pipeline because it, too, crosses the Appalachian trail on federal land. Protesters rallied outside the Supreme Court, while inside lawyers got just one hour to argue before the judges. His land is slated to be crossed by the Mountain Valley Pipeline and he wants that to change. “I’m not counting on the supreme court to win this fight for us," Satterwhite said.

ROANOKE, Va. – The winter of 2019-2020 has been rather wimpy so far for our area’s snow lovers. Around this time four years ago, however, snow blanketed the region. Parts of the Roanoke Valley and Highlands saw more than a foot of snow from this storm. Snow totals from January 22 and 23, 2016The National Weather Service in Blacksburg tweeted Thursday morning that parts of northern Virginia saw a whopping 30-40″ of snow! A major coastal storm brought 1-2 ft. of snow to the region.

The next five to seven days generally are going to bring unseasonably low temperatures to the eastern two-thirds of the US, with a first chilly round hitting Friday and a second, colder Arctic blast coming later. Friday's cold snap could bring below-freezing temperatures to some places. Wind gusts in Boston are reaching 25 to 35 mph and will bring wind chills into the 20s as well, the NWS said. "The Great Lakes are no longer ice covered, so here comes the Lake Effect snow again," the National Weather Service said. Temperatures are expected to rebound a bit in the East over the weekend, but colder air will be coming.

ROANOKE, Va. - Ballroom dancers from up and down the East Coast came to the Hotel Roanoke on Sunday for the Star Ball Dance Challenge. 29 dancers from different age groups and levels showed off their moves in front of three world-class judges. Dancers ranged in ages from 16 to 93 years old. In addition to the competitors, two professional ballroom dancers, Simona Caporale and Simone Spadon, danced the bolero, rumba and the cha-cha. Since then, the shark has moved further south to the Florida Keys, where she showed up on Saturday. OCEARCH, a nonprofit that tracks marine life in collaboration with SeaWorld, said it first tagged Unama'ki near Nova Scotia in September. She is the second biggest white shark the group has tagged in the northwest Atlantic, CNN affiliate WSOC-TV reported. "As a big mature female, Unama'ki has the potential to lead us to the site where she gives birth and exposes a new white shark nursery," OCEARCH said.

From there, it will move up the East Coast and will be close enough to give our area more needed rain late Saturday night into the first half of Sunday. It may start to get breezy Saturday night, as rain approaches the area from the south. Exactly how much rain we see could depend on a subtle shift in the storm's track. However, if a weak disturbance to the west can "pick the storm up," it would move farther east and give us less rain. Copyright 2019 CNN(CNN) - A fall nor'easter is expected to spin off the East Coast into the weekend. Air travel delays, power outages and beach erosion could result as the nor'easter lingers through Saturday, creating a soggy, blustery mess, particularly from New York City to Boston. Air delays are only expected to get longerTransit delays were already beginning to tick up Thursday morning in the Northeast because of the wind. "All of these weather events can slow air travel by themselves, but when combined in a nor'easter, air travel can grind to a halt." Even though this storm isn't expected to be as intense as a winter nor'easter, it will still pack a punch.

Hurricane Lorenzo is kicking up waves along the East Coast, despite being thousands of miles away. "A HIGH RISK of dangerous and life-threatening rip currents will be present at all east central FL beaches today due to long period swell from Hurricane Lorenzo," the Melbourne office said Monday. Swell from Lorenzo could produce waves generally up to 5 feet high along the East Coast, measured from the wave trough to its peak, said Kurt Korte, the lead East Coast forecaster at Surfline.com. But dangerous swells from the storm are "spreading across much of the North Atlantic basin," the National Hurricane Center said Monday afternoon. Hurricane-force winds from Lorenzo are extending as far as 90 miles from the storm's center, and tropical storm-force winds reach as far as 255 miles outward, the hurricane center said.

NEW YORK - Good news for vegetarians on the East Coast of the United States -- the Impossible Burger is arriving at your grocery stores. The Impossible Burger made a splash last week when it debuted in California -- in its first full weekend sale in Gelson's supermarkets, Impossible Burger outsold ground beef from cows, in terms of both revenue and the number of pounds sold, said Impossible Foods. "The Impossible Burger generated more excitement than any other single product we've seen in more than a half-century of operations," said Gelson's CEO Rob McDougall in the press release. The Impossible Burger debuted three years ago at Momofuku Nishi, a high-end restaurant in New York City owned by chef David Chang. Now, the Impossible Burger is served at over 17,000 restaurants, including Burger King and White Castle.

(CNN) - Impossible Burgers will hit grocery shelves for the first time on Friday. Impossible is launching its retail product as the meatless meat sector starts to become more crowded. The Impossible Burger debuted three years ago at Momofuku Nishi, a high-end restaurant in New York City owned by chef David Chang. Today, the Impossible Burger is served at over 17,000 restaurants, including Burger King and White Castle. It plans to make the Impossible Burger available in retail stores nationwide by the middle of next year.

ROANOKE, Va. - On the heels of Dorian, September 10 marks the climatological peak of hurricane season in the Atlantic Basin (Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico). Regardless, experts at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are forecasting a near-to-above average hurricane season still. There have been a total of seven named storms already in the Atlantic Basin, with Barry and Dorian each making a U.S. landfall. Hurricane season runs through November 30, with some notable storms having occurred in October. This is why it's best to be weather aware of the inland impacts, such as flooding and mudslides, even after Tuesday's climatological peak.

ROANOKE, Va. - While parts of the Carolinas have dealt with everything from tornadoes to flooding and storm surge to wind damage, we've been on the quiet side of Dorian. As Dorian moves away from the East Coast, the wind stays breezy at times through Friday and Saturday. Quite frankly, we've had much worse days in the fall and winter. The wind out of the north and northwest actually plays in our favor. Even though the humidity is pretty tolerable already, humidity levels may drop just a bit more behind Dorian.

The Eldridge family's Smart car now lives next to the isle of kitchen. With Hurricane Dorian churning up the East Coast, dad Patrick Eldridge worried his tiny automobile might blow away, so he rolled his baby straight into the kitchen of the family's Jacksonville home. His wife, Jessica Eldridge, thought it was so funny she took photos of the little vehicle and posted them on her Facebook page. That cracked up Jessica, who gleefully reposted all the posts of her husband's car. The nonprofit sent a tractor-trailer packed with 1,000 blessing buckets and 15 generators full of supplies out Wednesday morning. It's not a new mission for God's Pit Crew, but this time, it's a little different. While the wind turns gusty late Thursday and early Friday, it's unlikely that we see any damage from that. We will, however, see a drop in air pressure around the storm. As the air pressure lowers, the fluids in our joints expand and cause discomfort/pain. The lowest air pressure, and therefore the strongest wind and heaviest rain, is expected in areas east of I-95. One other thing that Dorian will do for our weather is keep temperatures from rising too high Thursday.

As Hurricane Dorian makes its way to the U.S. East Coast, residents in Florida are preparing for the worst the storm can bring. Tuesday afternoon, a bulldozer built barriers in anticipation of storm surge. A whole entire dune is protecting the people who live on the waterfront of Jacksonville, the hotels, the restaurants and the multi-million-dollar homes in the path of the hurricane. One woman took in nearly 100 stray dogs and gave them sanctuary as Dorian raged. ROANOKE, Va. - Hurricane Dorian has barely moved since Monday afternoon, wreaking havoc in the northern Bahamas. It is forecast to begin a turn to the north Tuesday, with impacts likely along the East Coast of the U.S. through Friday. It will get windy at times Thursday and perhaps even on Friday, especially the first half of the day. By Thursday, when Dorian is off the coast of the Carolinas, we'll start to feel the humidity a little bit more. Despite the higher humidity, a wind out of the northeast will keep temperatures from climbing too high Thursday afternoon.

ROANOKE, Va. - As of the National Hurricane Center's 11 a.m. update on Thursday, Dorian is forecast to make landfall on the East Coast of Florida as a Category 4 hurricane. In addition to high wind and storm surge, dangerous flash flooding is expected to occur in parts of the state. The high pressure system responsible for our nice weather Thursday will be the guiding force directing Dorian. The weaker high pressure is over the north Atlantic, the farther north Dorian can come and possibly impact us as soon as Wednesday. The stronger high pressure is over the north Atlantic, the farther south Dorian will go.

Name or not, here's what this system means for us and for others along the East Coast. A system off the East Coast of Florida has a 70% (high) chance of becoming a tropical storm in the next five days, as of a Friday morning update from the National Hurricane Center. As this storm moves into the Gulf Stream (narrow strip of warm water off the coast), it will likely become more organized. While it will likely mean more showers and storms and an increase rip current up and down the East Coast, it will have a loose connection to our weather here. The wind around this system, along with mostly the wind around high pressure to our north, will reinforce some cooler air and clouds for the weekend.

And now the Pink Lady Bandit: All of them captured, investigators say, due in no small part to their unique nicknames. It's common for the FBI to call unidentified serial robbers by descriptive, often silly monikers. Criminals named for defining featureThe Pink Lady Bandit stirred up interest for the pink handbag she carried during at least two of her robberies in Pennsylvania, Delaware and North Carolina. Nicknames help investigators ID nameless perps and generate publicity that can aid in their capture, retired FBI Special Agent Harry Trombitas said.

Much of the East Coast is experiencing abnormally high temperatures with highs expected over 100 degrees by the weekend. A cold front moving through the Midwest will reach the East Coast by Monday, bringing heavy rain and cooler air, according to CNN Meteorologist Ivan Cabrera. This week's high temperatures prompted cities across the US to open cooling centers, issue safety instructions to residents and cancel many outdoor events. One death has been attributed to the high temperatures: Former NFL player Mitch Petrus, 32, died of a heat stroke after working outside Thursday during a heat advisory in Arkansas, officials said. While temperatures on the East Coast and Midwest may sink down to the 70s on Monday, Sunday still has some heat in store.

Even as the most populated city in Paran, Curitibas natural beauty is always shining through. BRAINTREE, Mass. - The police department in Braintree, Massachusetts, says it's just too hot to battle crime, asking "anyone thinking of doing criminal activity to hold off until Monday." According to WPXI, the Braintree Police Department posted the request to its Facebook page Friday night as a July heat wave grips most of the East Coast. The department, in the tongue-in-cheek post, asks people to instead "stay home, blast the AC, binge Stranger Things season 3," among other things.

Overnight temperatures over the weekend won't drop below 80 degrees in many cities across the East Coast, the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center said. In Philadelphia and New Jersey, the weather service warned the heat may cause heat stress or heat strokes. Until then, city officials are taking precautions against the sweltering heat and preparing for what could be a deadly weekend. Animals, according to the weather service, can die of heat stroke within 15 minutes.
