"When you drive, you have much greater control of your own environment and the people around you and so I would think it's safer to drive in the present time," Schaffner said. But Schaffner also said if he needed to travel across country, as CNN Travel reader James Armstrong did, he would fly. He also wasn't convinced that all the interactions it would take to lodge and feed his family on the cross-country trip would be any safer than flying.
