The man, 25-year-old Xavier Tyler Slayton, was shot by a 17-year-old relative at a home in the 700 block of Cedar Forest Road, deputies said. Slayton, who was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital, will be charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit murder, according to deputies. Charges were not filed against the 17-year-old, deputies said.

Around 11:30 p.m. on Monday, Bedford County 911 received a call from the 100 block of Shepherd Lane reporting gunshots. They told deputies that the man who shot them was still inside the home. The suspect, who deputies later identified as 56-year-old Mark Edwin Turner, barricaded himself in the home for about two hours. "When deputies attempted to make contact he refused to come out," said Lt. Kyle Williams with the Bedford County Sheriff's Office.

The 5-year-old was treated at the scene for a superficial injury, police said. In addition to violent crimes, Jones said mental health is a concern. Moving forward, the chief said the public will play a key role in bringing crime numbers back down. Jones said crime numbers in Roanoke had been decreasing since 2013.
