It’s rivalry week as Virginia Tech prepares to take on Virginia on Saturday. While the Hokies did get the Commonwealth Cup back in Lane last fall, the feeling of losing in Charlottesville in 2019 still lingers.

It was a short hiatus without the Commonwealth Cup for Virginia Tech. After getting beat by Virginia for the first time in 15 years last season in Charlottesville, the Hokies reclaimed bragging rights on Saturday, earning a 33-15 win over the Cavaliers at Lane Stadium. Khalil Herbert rushed for 162 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries for Virginia Tech (5-6), which outscored Virginia in the second quarter, 24-0, to take a 27-7 halftime lead. Brennan Armstrong went 25-of-45 passing for 259 yards and two touchdown in defeat for Virginia (5-5).

BLACKSBURG, Va. – After being postponed, a new date has been set for the Commonwealth Cup. UVA will travel to Blacksburg to play at Lane Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 12. Rather than begin each team’s regular season, the game is now set to be the final regular-season match-up for each squad. The game was originally scheduled to be played Saturday at 7:30 p.m., but due to coronavirus cases at Virginia Tech, was postponed. A make-up date for the annual competition known as the Commonwealth Clash has not been set. Talks between the Atlantic Coast Conference, UVA and VT officials led to the mutual decision to move the football game between the two schools to a later date stemming from COVID-19 issues at Virginia Tech. The Hokies game against NC State, which was scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12, will now be played Sept. 26. We knew the Commonwealth Cup would be the end of the regular season for Virginia Tech and Virginia, but now, we know what time the 101st matchup between these two rivals will begin. Virginia Tech announced Monday morning that the Hokies quest for a 16th straight Commonwealth Cup will begin at noon on ABC. Virginia Tech won its seventh game Saturday, shutting out Georgia Tech, 45-0, raising the teams record to 7-3 and becoming bowl eligible. The Cavaliers are also 7-3 and are currently 5-0 at home on the season.
