Down in Virginia Beach at the Class 4 championships, Amherst County finished 4th as a team. The Lancers had an individual winner at the 182 weight class in Kaine Morris.

Ad“Two out of three years we’ve been to state title game, we get a little closer every year,” said Pulaski County head coach Scott Ratcliff. This season they reached a VHSL State Championship game for the first time in program history. The difference was, we made a few turnovers we didn’t want to and we had some shots that didn’t go in,” said Patrick Henry head coach Mike Hedrick. With the win Princess Anne has now won 8 consecutive VHSL State Championships, 12 overall as a program.

RINER, Va. – Last Thursday, the Auburn boys basketball team was patiently awaiting their 8 p.m. tip against Matthews in the Class 1 state basketball championship. “Once we saw the NCAA cancelled all their tournaments, we were like, oh no this isn’t good,” junior Reed Underwood said. “Then when we saw the VHSL cancelled all theirs, we realized, ours was probably next.”As they watched the Class 2 championship unfold, so did their fate. Auburn would be declared the Class 1 co-champions, and not play a game. “Then we were just like, we’re state champs, co-champs.”And as they rolled into the parking lot of the school that night, the Riner community was waiting.

SALEM, Va. – It proved to be a clean sweep on the volleyball court for our local teams in the VHSL State Finals. Auburn rose to the occasion and soared to win its first state title since 2014. In Class 2, the Radford Bobcats were in the state final for the third consecutive season, hoping to win its second in a row. The teams said this was there first time winning a match that went to five sets this season. Lord Botetourt completes the season with a record of 31-0, with each win coming via straight sets.

RINER, Va. - The perennial power Auburn volleyball team is out to a 5-1 start. After a run to the Class 1 state semifinals a year ago, they're bringing back a familiar face who won them three consecutive state titles years ago. Sherry Milliron is back as head coach for the Eagles since retiring after Auburn's last state title. Her sister is Julie Conner, the head volleyball coach at Lord Botetourt. "I did not have the same conflicts I had four years ago," Milliron said about her decision to return.

After winning back-to-back Class 1 state championships, Parry McCluer returns nine seniors from a year ago and the Fighting Blues came in with guns blazing. They're a special group but they've been instrumental to everything that we've done," said Parry McCluer girls basketball coach Adam Gilbert. The Pioneer District powerhouse is 9-2, 4-0 in district play. "You get those environments, as many as you can throughout the season before you get to postseason. With targets on their backs and smiles on their faces, Parry McCluer will continue it's quest for a 3-peat.
