Tropical Storm Debby came ashore in Florida as a Category 1 hurricane and quickly downgraded, but the storm still poses serious threats as it slogs on toward Georgia and South Carolina.

Hurricane Beryl has strengthened to Category 5 status as it crosses islands in the southeastern Caribbean.

The storm wiped out power to Nassau and the rest of New Providence, the country's most populous island, Bahamas Power and Light said. Hurricane Dorian is the fourth Category 5 hurricane to hit the United States since President Donald Trump has taken office.

CNNWASHINGTON (CNN) - President Donald Trump said Sunday that he's "not sure that (he's) ever even heard of a Category 5" hurricane, despite four such storms having threatened the US since he took office. And I've seen some Category 4's -- you don't even see them that much," Trump said at a briefing with officials at FEMA's headquarters in Washington, DC. "But a Category 5 is something that -- I don't know that I've ever even heard the term other than I know it's there. Last October, Hurricane Michael, which was originally designated as a Category 4, barreled into the Florida Panhandle as the third Category 5 hurricane to blast the US since Trump. Not the first time Trump said he's never heard of a Category 5Trump has previously indicated several other times that Category 5 hurricanes are unprecedented weather events that either he or others had never heard of or witnessed.

Dorian has been upgraded to a Category 5 Hurricane with maximum sustained wind speeds at 175 mph. The eye of the hurricane is about 20 miles wide and the storm continues to move slowly to the west at 8 mph. It is going to bring hurricane force winds to Great Abaco and Grand Bahaman Islands, along with powerful storm surge and flooding. The current forecast has Dorian making a slight curve to the west/northwest Monday into Tuesday as it approaches Florida's Atlantic coast. As it stands, the forecast keeps Dorian off the coastline of Florida early next week, then curving towards Georgia and the Carolinas late in the week.

Simply known as the Labor Day Storm, the 1935 hurricane was the strongest Atlantic hurricane to ever make landfall and the first designated Category 5 hurricane to ever touch the United States. The storm hit the Florida Keys on September 2KEY WEST, Fla. - We don't know yet what will happen as Hurricane Dorian approaches Florida's east coast this weekend, but its timing coincides with another Labor Day hurricane that rocked south Florida in 1935. The storm hit the Florida Keys on September 2 with peak winds of 200 mph.
