The Democrat is running to unseat incumbent Rep. Ben Cline in the district that extends up Interstate 81 from Roanoke to Front Royal. Betts faces a steep challenge in the 6th District as voters haven’t elected a Democrat since 1990, when the late Jim Olin won his fifth term in Congress. Despite the obstacles, Betts believes he has what it takes to unite both the urban and rural areas within district. “Bridging that gap is just getting out, doing the work, and listening to what people have to say," Betts said.

He also hopes to get federal funding for the improvement of Interstate 81, which runs through the majority of the 6th district. Cline said those politics have disillusioned some of the voters in the district he talked with, but he hopes to set a bipartisan example with a second term.

Good is taking a hard-core conservative stance on the issues, hoping the right-leaning district will stay red on Election Day. Virginia’s 5th District is normally a safe seat for Republicans, but this time pundits are expecting a close race between Republican Bob Good, and Democrat Dr. Cameron Webb in the district that’s larger than the state of New Jersey. If there is a central issue that has arisen in the fight for the seat, it’s support for police. He’s counting on a huge turnout for the president with long coattails in the 5th District; otherwise, the Republicans may be counted out in a race they can normally count on to stay red.
