As of Monday night, the U.S. Capitol Police had not responded to the allegations that the two Rocky Mount officers thought they were allowed in. A 10 News crew was there Monday night as two opposing groups of protesters clashed outside the Rocky Mount Town Council meeting. Bridgette Craighead is the founder of the Franklin County chapter of Black Lives Matter, and she said she wasnโt surprised by the result. โI also know that a lot of the white people donโt know whatโs going on or why we feel so strongly about the Confederate statue," Craighead said. Leland Mitchell is the chairman in Franklin County and said he was surprised more people didnโt vote to remove it. โIf they have a heart, I would hope that they would vote to remove it," Craighead said.

A few dozen people came out for the Chalk About It for racial justice over the weekend. With the townโs blessing, they wrote messages on a bridge such as โwhen hate is loud, love must be louderโ and โBlack Lives Matter.โBut the town said a number of people complained about it. Rocky Mount town manager James Ervin did not return multiple requests for comment. But on Facebook, the town posted a lengthy statement asking for tolerance of the original messages, and tolerance for its decision to remove them.
