Dr. Brian Hemphill will become the ninth president of Old Dominion University this summer. Hemphill was named Radford’s president in December 2015 and took office in July 2016. At ODU, Hemphill will succeed President John Broderick, who is retiring after 28 years at Old Dominion and 13 years as its president. “It is both an honor and privilege to be selected as the ninth president of Old Dominion University, a dynamic public research institution that has proudly served the Hampton Roads region and positively impacted the Commonwealth of Virginia,” said Hemphill.

When Radford University first merged with Jefferson College, the goal was to create more opportunities for students looking to get into the medical field. When the plans for Radford University Carilion were announced about three years ago students had no idea that they would be preparing to be on the frontlines of a global pandemic. About 86% of Radford University Carilion students continue their medical careers in Virginia, according to Hemphill. Students are also looking at what happens after the pandemic, focusing on areas like expanding telemedicine or more research on respiratory issues.

The Bigger Picture Rally is set to begin on Muse Quad Saturday afternoon, but Radford Mayor and University Faculty Member David Horton said there has been a concerning amount of misinformation about the event. Lots of online speculation about the event has been circulating by people including Virginia Senator Amanda Chase who took to Facebook criticizing the event and university President Brian Hemphill. Radford spokesperson Caitlyn Scaggs said the students have taken all the right steps to host the event. Only students, faculty and anyone with a valid Radford ID card will be able to attend the event on Saturday.

During the semester, students will be required to wear face coverings while in class, conducting business on campus, and in shared common spaces. Faculty will be provided the option to stand behind a clear barrier at a podium or wear a face covering. The university provided more details about its plan in its Early Opening Plan Executive Summary. This plan ensure that students and others do not travel over Thanksgiving Break and then return to campus for final exams followed by Winter Commencement, according to University President Dr. Brian Hemphill.

During a time in which many of our new and returning students and their families are experiencing financial challenges due to the global health pandemic and related economic downturn, Radford University is fully maintaining its steadfast commitment to the accessibility and affordability of higher education, said President Dr. Brian Hemphill. For undergraduate students studying on the main campus located in Radford, Virginia, as well as the Roanoke Higher Education Center and the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center located in Abingdon, tuition will remain the same from the 2019-2020 academic year to the 2020-2021 academic year. For in-state, undergraduate students studying at Radford University Carilion (RUC) located in Roanoke, Virginia, there will be a 10 percent decrease in tuition and fees for the 2020-2021 academic year when compared to the 2019-2020 academic year, representing the Universitys continued effort to decrease cost, while maintaining quality, for RUC students. In addition to a tuition and fee decrease for RUC students studying in Roanoke, Radford University will institute a competitive pricing structure for RUCs fully online programs in order to expand the workforce pipeline across high-demand areas for health sciences professionals.

Radford University President Brian Hemphill gave his annual state of the university address on Friday during which, among other news, he announced two big developments outlined in the university's master plan. The university is planning to build a full service, multi-story hotel near campus at the intersection of Tyler Avenue and Calhoun Street. The "River Campus" project will provide outdoor activities for students, staff, faculty and community members. As "visiting scholars" at Radford, the New River students will live in campus residence halls, eat in the dining halls and study on campus.
