In it, Sexton mentions the role family Bibles have played in record keeping and that several Bible publishers are headquartered in Nashville. Ad“The Holy Bible has great historical and cultural significance in the State of Tennessee as a record of the history of Tennessee families that predates some modern vital statistical records,” Sexton said in the resolution. “Families recorded their own vital records in family Bibles that were passed down through the generations.”Two other states have tried and failed to get the Bible designated as their state book: Louisiana in 2014 and Mississippi in 2015.

Ambassador to Japan Bill Hagerty rode the endorsement of President Donald Trump to victory Thursday in a contested Republican primary for an open U.S. Senate seat in Tennessee. The Nashville businessman emerged from a tough challenge from trauma surgeon Manny Sethi to clinch his partys nomination for the seat of retiring Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander. Last July, Trump let Tennessee voters know he would back Hagerty for the seat, months before Hagerty declared himself a candidate. Hagerty spent more than $9.6 million on the race through mid-July, compared to the $4.2 million spent by Sethi. Republicans are heavily favored to keep the seat, considering the GOP has held both Tennessee Senate seats since 1994.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Cyntoia Brown was released early Wednesday from the Tennessee Prison for Women, where she was serving a life sentence for killing a man when she was a 16-year-old prostitute. Kim Kardashian West, Rihanna and other celebrities had lobbied for Brown's release. Now 31, Brown will remain on parole for 10 years, on the condition she does not violate any state or federal laws, holds a job and participates in regular counseling sessions, Haslam's commutation says. Brown released a statement Monday saying she wants to help other women and girls suffering sexual abuse and exploitation.

Cyntoia Brown was released from prison Wednesday, months after being granted clemency by Gov. Brown, 31, was sentenced to life in prison when she was just 16. She served 15 years behind bars for the 2004 murder of a Tennessee real estate agent, Johnny Allen, 43. The prosecution argued, however, that Brown had intended to rob Allen because she took his wallet after the murder.
