Recently, Montgomery County agreed to move forward with the new Phase 3 guidelines, allowing the use of shared equipment. “I was super excited to actually be able to play even though its just hitting and passing,” junior Allyson Martin said. “You get to get out and see your friends every day so that’s fun, and we get to touch a volleyball and that’s what we love,” McGuire finished.

Auburn has been conditioning for a week, working on sprints, agilities, lifting, and going over plays in the classroom. Head coach Cam Akers said that they will continue to work out until a final decision is made by the VHSL. “It’s obviously different than how we’d normally do things,” Akers said. But it’s nice to see these guys come out, be resilient through this time, and come out here and get back to work,” Akers said.

The Auburn star shortstop committed to play softball at Radford, and was ready for her final season, hoping to defend Auburn’s Class 1 title. Coaches have been told to treat this new time as a dead period, which means limited contact with the players pertaining to softball. And even though Boyd is heading off to play at the next level, there’s no replacement for a high school senior season.

Auburn would be declared the Class 1 co-champions, and not play a game. “Then we were just like, we’re state champs, co-champs.”And as they rolled into the parking lot of the school that night, the Riner community was waiting.

VHSL, Virginia’s governing body of high school sports, announced Thursday that Friday and Saturday’s state championship games are canceled due to coronavirus fears. “After continuing to assess the impact of COVID-19 and the recent cancellations throughout the sports world, we felt it was in the public interest to cancel our championship finals for Friday and Saturday," VHSL Executive Director Dr. John W. “Billy” Haun said. "“While we understand how disappointing this is for all fans of our teams, we feel this decision is in the best interest of public health, including that of, most importantly, our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, families, and fans.”

Washington. “I told the three volleyball girls as we were walking in, the last time you guys were here it was a state championship,” head coach Renee Favaro said.

I needed to get stronger, I needed to improve my defense, improve shooting and everything,” he said. “He’s averaging 22 points a game, almost 5 assists a game, with a lot of attention thrown his way every game. We look to him to do a little bit of everything for us.”The Eagles are currently 8-6 overall and 3-1 in the Mountain Empire District under head coach Terry Millirons, who happens to be the husband of volleyball coach Sherry Millirons.

Auburn rose to the occasion and soared to win its first state title since 2014. In Class 2, the Radford Bobcats were in the state final for the third consecutive season, hoping to win its second in a row. The teams said this was there first time winning a match that went to five sets this season. Lord Botetourt completes the season with a record of 31-0, with each win coming via straight sets.
