RADFORD, Va. – Prior to his arrest, an 18-year-old Radford University student was found drunk in another student’s dorm room, according to Radford University police. 10 News acquired the police report that breaks down what happened prior to Aris Eduardo Lobo-Perez being arrested and taken to jail, where he later died. They arrived and spoke with the RA on duty who, according to the police report, told them that someone had staggered into the building with bloodshot eyes. When the fifth-floor RA arrived, he identified the individual in question as Lobo-Perez. He was then taken to the magistrate at the New River Valley Regional Jail and transferred into the jail’s custody.

DUBLIN, Va. – Authorities will not file any charges in connection with a Radford University student’s death last year at the New River Valley Regional Jail. Lobo-Perez died from opioid toxicity, compounded by acute and chronic asthma, according to the medical examiner’s office in Roanoke. The case is now officially closed and no one is charged in connection with the medical examiner’s findings, according to Virginia State Police. The investigation was conducted at the request of the New River Valley Regional Jail. Lobo-Perez was then taken to New River Valley Regional Jail in Pulaski County.

Around 7:20 a.m. Thursday: Jail personnel approached Lobo-Perez to offer him breakfast, which he declined. Authorities say jail personnel tried to resuscitate Lobo-Perez immediately, but he was declared dead at the jail. At a yard sale to benefit Lobo-Perez’s family, a friend, Joey Fernandez, described him as a funny guy. In a statement, Radford University’s vice president of student affairs expressed sympathy for Lobo-Perez’s family and friends.

Police say that jail personnel made immediate efforts to resuscitate Lobo-Perez; however, he was declared dead at the jail. State police investigators are awaiting additional information and analysis from the medical examiner as they continue their investigation into Lobo-Perez's death.

Geller said jails are not required to have state police investigate when an inmate dies, but requesting a state police investigation is not uncommon for jails. In a statement, Radford University's vice president of student affairs expressed sympathy for Lobo-Perez's family and friends.
