The report finds that Virginia earned failing grades on reducing and preventing tobacco use, including e-cigarettes. โState of Tobacco Controlโ 2021 grades states and the District of Columbia in five areas that have been proven to prevent and reduce tobacco use and save lives. The report looks at five areas, funding for prevention programs, state tobacco taxes, smoke-free workplace laws, access to services to quit tobacco and ending the sale of flavored tobacco products. Today marks one year since the Virginia General Assembly passed the Equal Rights Amendment. Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the measure, which would prohibit discrimination based on sex. Congress set a deadline of June 30, 1982 for 38 states to ratify the amendment.

This Lung Cancer Awareness Month the American Lung Association has partnered up with the Ad Council to encourage those at particular risk to get screened using a relatively new non-invasive and painless technology. The low-dose CT scan detects lung cancer in the early stages, often before there are any symptoms, when the disease is more treatable. "If everybody who qualified got this scan, it would save about 48,000 lives a year," says the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's Dr. Jacobb Sands. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths.

"Tobacco 21 is such a good law if it's implemented correctly," said Kimberly Covey, Executive Director of the American Lung Association in Ohio. To curb teen use, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine (R) signed "Tobacco 21" regulations into law this summer. However, the FDA only tested a handful of Ohio vape shops last year. Also, the federal age to purchase vape products is still 18, so the feds cannot enforce sales made to anyone older.
