ROANOKE, Va. – If you’re looking to get active for a good cause, an upcoming virtual 5K will allow you to do just that. You can run, jog or walk any time between April 5 and April 12 anywhere you’d like to take part in the Hollins Hustle Virtual 5k. “Will be used for all the teams across the department. Hopefully to advance our budgets a little bit to allow us to do a little bit more for the student-athletes and we’re working on a project to upgrade locker rooms to get rid of the old metal lockers to put in nice wood, open lockers and spruce those areas up for the student-athletes,” said athletic director Myra Sims. Registration is open thru March 31.

BLACKSBURG, Va. While an annual Blacksburg race wont happen in person this year, Hokies shouldnt put their running shoes away just yet. The 8th annual Hokie Half Marathon and 5K will be held virtually. Anyone who has already signed up for the race has the option to get a refund, defer their entry until 2021 or complete the race virtually. Participants have one month to complete the race. Anyone who plans to run the virtual race will be refunded the difference between the cost of their entry and the virtual entry price.

This time of year is a big season for Rescue Mission Ministries, a crisis intervention center in Roanoke. One of the biggest events that is keeping Rescue Mission so busy right now is its annual Drumstick Dash. Kevin Berry, the community outreach director for Rescue Mission believes this event represents what Thanksgiving is all about. The Rescue Mission is also hosting a Thanksgiving feast at noon Thanksgiving Day. Another big event Rescue Mission is juggling is Coatsgiving, its annual coat drive.

ROANOKE, Va. – Atlantic Union Bank donated $23,000 on Tuesday in support of a Roanoke Thanksgiving tradition. The money donated to the annual Thanksgiving Drumstick Dash will support Rescue Mission’s food services. Atlantic Union Bank is the main sponsor for the 5K. A Minnesota mom was worried his son wouldnt finish the 5K race, but the 9-year-old boy surprised everyone and instead came in first place in the 10K race. It has never been on our radar, his mom Heather Boedigheimer-Lovell told InsideEdition.com. The 10K race happened simultaneously, and runners for both groups started together. He came in first place, completing the 10K in about 48 minutes, with the next fastest runner coming in a full minute behind. I have never seen him so red after a race, his mom said.
