Kendrick blessed, thankful for opportunity to coach alongside Vick at Norfolk State

‘I don’t know what I did to deserve this, but thank you Lord, that’s all I can say.’

ROANOKE, Va. – “It’s something that me and Michael talked about several years ago when we was coaching and doing all of the camps all around the country and stuff.”

When Michael Vick accepted the job as the new Norfolk State head coach, there was no doubt that he would fill his staff with guys that he not only knows. But guys that also know football. So, when the news came earlier this week that Andre Kendrick had been tabbed to be running backs coach it came as no surprise.

It wasn’t a brand new idea for he and Vick to be coaching with each other one day. The dynamic duo was a force at Virginia Tech--both part of that 1999 team that played for a national championship. But bigger than plays they made on the field is the relationship they’ve maintained over the decades that’s led to this opportunity.

“Mike loved me because I wasn’t a ‘yes’ man to him,” Kendrick said. “You know, and he didn’t like that. You know, he wanted you to be your man, stand on and be a man. And you know, he loved that about me because he knew my love was genuine. He told me like, bro, you have unconditional love. Once we had that, that’s what it was. I don’t know what I did to deserve this, but thank you Lord, that’s all I can say.

Kendrick says it’s an absolute win-win that his son DreSean will also be with him transferring from William & Mary to Norfolk State.
