ROANOKE, Va. – According to its website, the Carolina Panthers recently signed two familiar names and faces from Southwest Virginia.
Northside High School grad and former Wake Forest standout Carlos “Boogie” Basham will be now be playing closer to the “540″. The linebacker originally drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 2021 was signed to a reserves/futures contract earlier this week. During his NFL career so far, Basham has played in 40 games over four seasons and tallied 4.5 sacks. Basham was traded to the Giants in 2023.

Known as the “pride of Big Stone Gap,” former Virginia Tech tight end James Mitchell was also signed by the Panthers to a futures/reserve contract. Originally drafted by the Detroit Lions, Mitchell spent three seasons in the Motor City. He played in 30 games in three seasons hauling in 13 catches, 141 yards and 1 touchdown.
