SALEM, Va. – Ataijah “Tay” Taylor received a rare honor on Tuesday as Salem High School retired her jersey during a ceremony held on her home court.
“Honestly, it was all a shock,” Taylor said. “As soon as Coach Bradley told me they were going to retire my jersey, it was really a ‘wow’ moment. I was like, ‘Whoa, this is something rare, something that doesn’t happen a lot.’ I’m just grateful.”
Taylor left a lasting mark on the Spartan basketball program. She finished her high school career with over 1,600 points and led the team to its only state championship in 2013.
Taylor remains active in the sport, now serving on the coaching staff for the Patrick Henry High School girls’ basketball team, which happened to be the visiting team during the ceremony.
The Salem girls basketball team moved to 10-0 after beating Patrick Henry Tuesday, 50-42.
