SALEM, Va. – Excitement is building on the wrestling mats with another unique event on tap this weekend. For the second consecutive season, Roanoke College wrestling will host “The Match at Mill Mountain Theatre.”
The Maroons will have a dual with fellow ODAC foe Ferrum College. You’ll recall last year this event created quite the buzz for not only the Roanoke College program but their opponent Washington & Lee as well. The Maroons are once again hard at work in what’s been a successful season thus far. They were the preseason favorite to repeat as conference champions. Head coach Nate Yetzer and the guys are looking forward to another exciting atmosphere at MMT.
“We’re really close to selling out already, so it’s it’s it’s been It’s been awesome,” said Maroons head coach Nate Yetzer. “I think our guys really look forward to it, so yeah It’s something we’re going to continue to grow. Ferrum, this is kind of the last time we’re probably going to wrestle Ferrum. We might see them, I don’t know, we’ll see how it goes, but you know they’re leaving the ODAC obviously and going to Division 2, so hopefully we go out on top.”
“It’s definitely something different, something new, and I think the atmosphere is very exciting,” said Maroons junior Mark Samuel. “It was cool to be in that theater in front of all those all those people. I think honestly just treat it like it’s any other match. It’s no different from a tournament. You just got to go out there and wrestle and go give it your all.”
“You’re going into a theater--it might be bigger but you have to be ready for the big stage,” said Maroons freshman Jonah Paulino.
“The Match at Mill Mountain” will take place this Sunday, January 19 at 2 p.m. Doors open at 1pm. 10 Sports’ Eric Johnson will be on hand to serve as announcer for the evening.
