Mike Young basketball camp helping area kids learn fundamentals, skills of the game

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – It was a competitive afternoon on the court at the Christiansburg Recreation Center for the final day of Mike Young’s Basketball Camp.

Around 50 kids had the opportunity to learn from Virginia Tech basketball players, led by Hokies legend Ace Custis. The campers participated in skills training, drills, fundamentals, and a bit of friendly competition on the camp’s final day.

said. “It’s such a tight knit community out here, everybody is pouring as many resources as they can into one another, so it is a really special place.”

“[We learned] how to play the game, really learning how to understand the game more, and see what it is like to be with a bunch of college athletes, it’s great,” camper Rylan Lavinder said.

The men’s basketball team dedicated their valuable summer time to give back to the community that supports them during the winter season. This gesture is especially meaningful for player Mylyjeal Poteat, who emphasized the importance of giving back to the community that shows unwavering support for the team.

“I always say, the community pours so much into us as athletes at Virginia Tech, so I take every opportunity I can to give back to them,” grad student Mylyjael Poteat said. “It’s such a tight knit community out here, everybody is pouring as many resources as they can into one another, so it is a really special place.”
