Surfing was added to the Olympic program for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, although the Games were delayed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The contest was held at Tsurigasaki Beach, about 60 miles east of Tokyo.

Brazil's Italo Ferreira won gold in the men's event despite snapping his board early on during the final heat against Japan's Kanoa Igarashi. Andino then lost in the quarterfinals to Igarashi.
